    Hi,

So we want to upgrade the RAM in one of my Kids PCs, but I cant work out what to buy, and I think we've got Corsair Z Spec AMD RAM in an Intel mobo!

    Here's the specs:

My head is spinning with all the RAM part numbers and specs!

What should I do to upgrade to 32GB?

I tried sticking some of the RAM I do have in with the Z spec RAM, but it wouldnt boot.

The other RAM I have in my PC:
    • Mobo/CPU: B560/11600K
    • 2x 8GBcmw16gx4m2E3200C16
    • 2x 8GB cmw16gx4m2C3200C16

    So what should I do?
    1. Buy more CMW16GX4M2Z3200C16
    2. Buy a totally new 4x 8GB RAM kit?
    3. Stick the RAM from my PC into the older 10th Gen board?
Then upgrade my PC to faster RAM it can better use?
If so, what should I buy?
    I'm totally confused LOL :)

I'd start with the list of compatible (supported) RAM for your motherboard (from the manufacturer's website) often referred as the QVL. You can usually sort by size, speed etc.

While it is "ryzen optimized" it should work no issues on an intel board.

In the end I decided to ditch the Z Ram and purchsed a 2x16GB 32GB Kit:

The speeds and numbers so confusing!

Even when you figure out compatibility, there's still no easy way to know what the right one to buy is!

    Thanks!

    It still confuses me LOL

    So many part numbers...

I used the PC Part Picker website to double check compatibility in the end :)

It's not like RAM is crazy expensive (unless you are spec'ing a Mac), so I kinda want a website to tell me what the best RAm is when money is no object! :-D

Yes, works with no issues on it's own.

But as soon as I mixed it with the other Corsair RAM I have, the system wouldnt boot!

So I'm cutting my loses and will sell the Z spec RAM :)

Should run just fine with the i5 10400 :). I was going to recommend a 2x16gb kit rather than 4x8gb if possible.

Yeah mixing different models is generally a no-no. They'll often have different sub-timings, different IC manufacturers/models etc.

You did the right and easiest thing to do, mixing ram modules even if the primary timings and speed look the same can cause all kinds of issues as you've found. Sometimes even the same exact model number from different batches can cause issues as ic's or pcb revisions change.
