Hahaha, yeah we ate dinner at that small lounge table the other night
Seriously now, where are you getting your sata power and data cables from?
The best I’ve managed to do is some cable-mod sata data ones and sata power in pairs then connecting molex cables, which should be here tonight from Amazon.
Pretty much molex to sata cables to avoid the 3.3v issue
which is the best test. Surface test?
Just got the drive.
Surface Scan in HD Sentinel should be fine, but just be prepared for a long wait. I haven't used HD Sentinel myself though, so I'm only going from what I've read
I've only used badblocks on Linux.
Another cables question for those with a preponderance of hard drives ...
Are the cables in this photo custom jobs? And then, how is there not a power problem with the one power feed daisy chained like that?
yeah looks custom.
and if the cable is of sufficient gauge to handle the require current at a voltage drop that is within spec, then no it'll work just fine. it may struggle if all those drives try to spin up at the same time, but steady state running it'd be fine.
Definitely custom, you can see here where one of the sata plugs was originally:
I did a similar thing a while back on one of my servers, although I kept it at 4 per cable, not 10 on 1
Same here, still got loads of the connectors around that I keep finding everywhere
Can't wait until 40TB spinners hit the market.
Well you’ll be doing a fair bit of waiting for badblocks or a rebuild!
there'll be performance gains purely because of areal density improvements, but yeah there's unlikely to be order of magnitude improvements.
that's why there's RAIDz3 and (always and) backups.
10 x 40TB should last me a while. I have close to 270TB’s worth of the finest pr0nz.
Could you please send me in the right direction for the bits to give this a go.
Hmm I found the connectors here: https://au.element14.com/molex/6792...cpt-5pos-idc-idt/dp/1507541?st=sata connector
but can't find the caps that go on the back. But at least you know some part numbers and can dig around a bit
10 off here
Better option here and local. After GST and Paypal currency exchange you may as well buy local. And you don't have to wait till next year to receive the item.
Thanks so much all of you. You gotta luv OCAU forums.
This appears to be the lowest cost per terabyte but would you be kind enough to tell me the model number of the actual drive inside the case and also confirm its not SMR ? Thanks
what is smr?
