all good here for now thanks.
waiting on the 20tb to drop to 700 before my next purchase
I knew there were 18TB but did know about the 20TB
Toshiba also made some major hard disk related announcements this week.
Industry overview here:
Sounds good, that'll push the 16TB down in price!
Hoping for the same..
I'm at a point where i dont care if the drive is SMR, just want that capacity
Yeah Chia is having that impact on many datahoarders. Patience is the key.
fingers crossed. I've been putting off buying new disks till the prices come back down to respectable levels.
In need of some bulk 16 or 18tb disks, anyone rate the toshibas? Can be had for $32 TB delivered which isn't too bad in the current market.
small sample size, but I've had two out of three 8TB and four out of four 3TB fail in my unRAID.
I think I saw some Seagates for that price yesterday, I'll see if I can find them for you.
Edit: How about some Seagate EXOS X18 18TB for $590aud (+extras of course) That's around $33/TB
Actually, scrap that, it's $671 with extras, so $37/TB.
*unloads 8 toshiba drives from cart* lol, thanks for the heads up.
Thanks but yeah $37TB a little high.
good idea, because Toshiba remains in business by making the shittiest HDDs ever.
On the backblaze report (https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-q2-2021/) the seagates and WD's actually have a higher failure rate, but they also have a much larger sample size. Damn you Chia, I just want good spinning rust that doesn't cost and arm and a leg!!
imho, buy what you want. every hdd will die sometime, no getting around that. just be prepared for it with suitable redundancy and backups.
yep, i've had a great run with four of the 3/4TB seagates that were terrible. up until this month actually. so after close to a decade two of the four have just gone terminal. one with very little warning, the other is still 'scraping' along but is absolutely on the way out.
I'm looking to move to a six disk raid 6 from a four disk raid 5 on my 'big' array. raid is my 'backup'
(yes yes yes, i know its not real backup. but parity is all i can afford for now)
I have two 8TB I can lend you indefinitely if needed.
thanks for the mega generous offer mate but pass for now
I'll grab some 10tb ironwolfs to make the expansion easy (???) but it'll be a while before i do any of that.
ill have the "important" stuff backed up before that kicks off. Its going to take over a week to go from 4x10r5 to 6x10r6
maybe when the time comes I'll backup the linux iso directory on your 8's and then you can be my offsite backup
These appear to be on sale. Not the best price but not terrible post Chia... (the good sale price was $500)
Been running 24 of them for 6months now, and older models far longer
