I don't get why they didn't just have a low level format utility that let's you choose.

    10gb drive. 14gb optional.

marketing and simplicity for dumb users I think.

The shingling is also only about a 20% change. I think the write heads are different between SMR and CMR drives.

Yes they are, amongst some other things.

Yes but even that’s changing for the worse with modern tech like HAMR.

    ———————————————-

SMR is largely for data warehousing/archiving for hyperscalers whose business model is slow ingress, large scale data storage that while it’s still hot data it’s infrequently accessed.

    It’s forklift data!

Since July 2024 ive managed to run out of space on my little Qnap of 48TB, currently running 2 x 16 and 2 x 8. Going to replace the 2 x 8 with another 2 x 16 ( or 18 ). But looking at the prices they have gone up a lot, i paid about $270 EACH for the 16TB drives back in 2024, nothing on the ED site seems close to that right now :(

I found two drives that were casualties of the FARM hours issue, and East Digital is unable to replace them (nil stock). Anyway, they said that they will put through a PayPal refund.
Has anyone else had this happen to them lately? Times must be tough.

I'm assuming you are meant to send the drive back for the refund?

are you talking about power on hours? both my 16TB from ED are showing about 100 hours since 2024, i think i bought actual new ones not refurbs, but tbh i cant remember as my receipt doesn't even say if its "NEW" or "REFURB".

Yes these were bought “new” (leftovers from OEM order).

Here they are with the large discrepancy between smart data and farm data hours, so they clearly did have their Smart runtime info zeroed.

It’s not what the owner had paid for, that’s why. (not my drives)

I don’t know for sure, but I imagine they just got caught up in the same scam as all the other dealers that buy through grey market channels.
    If you’re not up to speed, we’re talking about this kind of thing;
    https://www.heise.de/en/news/Ironwo...-is-becoming-more-sophisticated-10287099.html

    https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-com...s-as-clues-point-at-chinese-chia-mining-farms

Understand though, it’s focused on Seagate drives solely because they run a secondary internal log as an additional log to normal smart-data. That’s compared to say WD, who have said they don’t have anything like Seagate’s FARM.
If it wasn’t for FARM logs they (the scammers, not Seagate) would never have been caught out.

If you can't trust wholesalers selling very large quantities of 3 year old drives as new, then who can you trust :upset:

Did anyone (except blinky) really believe the good fairy found several 40ft containers of new drives and thought "I know I'll sell these for half price"

Well are the ones you bought not new hours-wise, apart from old DOM?
