Mainly be using the headphones for gaming, so no bluetooth phones. Still, never heard of those before so was interesting to read about em.

    Typical Drop value.
Uses driver from the old Oppo PM2 or 3. Likely best sounding for the price.

Just a quick note to say six years later my AF140's are still going strong. Originally I paired them with the original Dragonfly and recently upgraded to a Cobalt. (OMG)

Thanks Snufkin. Thanks for the brutal honesty at the start too.

Recommendations for sub $200 gaming headset, happy to buy mic externally if sound quality is superior.

Not fused on wired/wireless/usb or 3.5mm

    Thanks

What type of games? Fps or mmo/open world? Are you after imaging and positioning or just overall immersion?

So you want something with good soundstaging and imaging. So open back and circumaural. With that budget I’d be hard pressed to find anything better than the HD800/HD800S to be honest.

You thought someone wanted to spend $1200 on a gaming headset and that didn't make you blink and read it again?

no? I use a pair of $3500 headphones for the occasional gaming and just paid a deposit for a pair $85k electrostatic earspeaker+amp headphone setup (Orpheus 2).

You’re also forgetting that some of us that dwell in this sub forum own or come from high end earphone/speaker setups and have participated in other high end audio forums where it is normal somebody would want to spend chump change $1.2k on gaming headphones.

Good for you. I can guarantee nobody has spent $85k, nor $3.5k on a "gaming headset".

$1.2k on "headphones for gaming" is one thing. $1.2k on "gaming headphones" is quite another, in that there aren't any.

Gaming headphones is just a marketing ploy, take away the wank factor equaliser software you have both the same thing, both using conventional headphone transducers in a shell with different aesthetics, the technology used in the same shit. Don’t be fooled by the fancy marketing bs.

why not? I rotate between a pair of old SR-009’s and sometimes my Utopia. You’re vastly underestimating how much I have invested in high end audio if you think those figures are high $. I’am also a local manufacturer of various valve based amplification products.

I think with some of this stuff there is the law of diminishing returns, above which your paying money, and big money, for virtually zero gain.

You know there is talk you can customise parts of your HE-1 order. Trim, possibly marble colour.

I game on what headphones I have. That ranges between $400 to a figure we don't need to talk about. But that's gaming on a hifi headphone. Which is usually the best option. Some gaming headsets aren't bad though. Some!
