Well a few weeks back I planned a shoot with Cynthia, a model I met at a recent shoot, and a mate of mine, Josh, and invited a friend along Skeptik for an impromptu model shoot. Check out Skeptik's tunes on his Facebook page, well worth a listen if you have time.

Back to the shoot, well, it in essence turned into a hip hop shoot by the end and it was great fun. This was the first real shoot I've done like this. I'm reasonably happy with the shots and hope to improve more as I go along.

Mel from OCAU was there too - http://www.flickr.com/photos/25108384@N05/ - but left early to make pancakes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25108384@N05/3645679646/

So here's my favourites of the afternoon - some were shot with a DIY Ringflash and 580exII and the others with a few strobes and umbrellas.

Got some pretty serious shadows going on the faces there in a few.
Also, it's considered a faux pas to shoot a DJ with headphones on, not DJ'ing. The little studio mixer isn't great for street cred either.

Nice work on the outdoor ones though

Cheers. Oh yeah, I have stacks more where the shadows are too off putting. But, first time using lights, so still got a very long way to go haha

Thanks man. Yeah maybe so was just fun and practise though, don't take it too seriously haha. Skeptik hasn't done anything like this before, and he was more to come long so I can give the Strobist Boot Camp a go

nice to see a girl with a nice full non gaunt face
i like most of the poses some of the shadows though are a bit of a distraction.

i think she is a great model for hip=hop. she has the olive skin has a face that says hip hop to

Probably showing my age a bit here, but for some reason I get a "Sound Unlimited Posse" feel from some of these. Not a negative, but some of it is 'nearly' serious hip hop.

Edit: It was the girl that reminded me : http://www.discogs.com/image/R-455508-1169540688.jpeg

Not often I suggest more PP, but this is the kinda style that warrants it. Have you tried any PP to make them pop out more? Not so much the portrait ones, but the poses like 2 and 3 look a little flat to me. Also 11 would be awesome a little closer, her pose and facial expression is in your face, but the composition makes it look like shes backing up or something, maybe thats just the 800 pixl effect... Great shoot though, and nice lighting, the ring flash is very appropriate.

Every time I try to seriously look at the photos to give a genuine crit, I think "wigga" and zone out.

Sorry man, the shots do nothing for me.
