Three hundred and twenty minutes of photon capture to produce this image of the Horse head and Flame nebulae.

At 1500 Light years away, the dark Horse head shape is made of thick cloud of dust, silhouetted against the bright emissions of the hydrogen gas behind it.

Sometimes the upload algorithms turn this image an over saturated magenta. It should be a lighter pink. If you are having this problem, the image is also on my website so you can see it as it should be here.

    its pretty amazing.

are these things you find or have they already been discovered with coordinates for you to dial in?

at those distances (light years) i would imagine 1 degree off would be a huge difference

Thanks heaps to all of you!

Yes, the things I photograph are already known, with deep space objects found by known co-ordinates, catalogue numbers or even proximity to known stars and constellations. For this one, I know it is right next to the bright star Alnitak in Orion's belt, so I aimed at that then composed the frame.

Nice capture - I always love shots of the horse Head, reminds me of some of my first memories of astronomy in primary school.
