How can a remote control be faulty/not working, but not?

I have this Samsung tv. Has the remote that came with it. The power button would turn the telly on, but none of the other buttons would then work, including the power button to turn it off. Change the batteries. Nope, not working. Walk right up to the telly in case there's something in the way/messing things up. Doesn't matter.

Here's the thing. I have a universal remote so I figure I'll shanghai that into service. All of the original remote buttons worked to copy them to the universal remote..... The universal is working properly, no worries, so what it learnt is correct. It doesn't seem that there's anything wrong with the telly part receiving the remote signals either.

How can this be? What's wrong with the stupid remote?

I'd say the battery terminals are partially corroded or have an oxidised build up on them... maybe try brushing it off with some fine sand paper and bending the terminals out a bit so there is a better connection to the batteries too, as it could be loose.

If there is sign of a previous battery leak, that could well have caused further damage.

Good news is there are replacement remotes usually available on eBay... however it seems you're all sorted now with the universal? :)

    Thanks.

Insofar as using the telly, yes, but I'm just curious and a bit annoyed at why the normal remote is playing funny buggers and pretending to be broken when it really isn't.

The battery compartment is pretty much pristine. There's no corrosion or oxidisation. There aren't any bendy bits. The positive end is just flat and it's shiny and the batteries fit in there as tight as tight, there's no wobble or looseness at all (the other end is a spring). Nothing's ever leaked in there. I use rechargeable batteries (energizer or eneloop), none has ever leaked.

Have you cracked it open to try to find the fault or repair it?

no, just to put the batteries in. I couldn't repair any fault, and how can there be a fault when it transmits all the right things into my other remote, just not into the telly?

Sorry, I didn't see your earlier post. No, but it is obviously sending IR signals, because it sent them into the universal remote. I copied the buttons over.

What "mode" is the remote in? It may be set for another device after the TV is turned on... so won't respond to the TV if set wrong.

Just the tv. If it was on a different source, it wouldn't be showing the tv. And it's just a remote for the tv, it doesn't control anything else.

Gotcha... some of the older Samsung remotes do, like a STB or DVD player.

well, maybe it would if I had one, but I don't have one and I can't see any buttons for something else on there.

Love that movie... often re-watch it sometimes on Xmas Eve. You'd better keep an eye out around the place... got a microwave?

I hate that tv anyway. Maybe I'll just get a different tv. The gremlins can have at it somewhere else....
