I have a Huawei DG8245v modem/router, the transfer speed between my laptops are snail paced at less than 1mb/s most of the time.

My internet plan is 70/20, but since this is a local network, I think internet plan speed is not irrelevant.

How do I increase WiFi transfer speed between computers on my WLAN? Do I need to upgrade my modem/router to a more powerful one?

What type of internet connection do you have?

    To answer your question
    1. How big is the area?
    2. How far away are your devices from the wifi router
    4. How many walls does the signal have to go through and what are the walls made of ie plaster board, brick, double brick or concrete
    5. What speed do you get when you bring the laptop next to the wifi router

Things to consider, do you need a more powerful main router or do you need a repeater....

Wifi is two way communication, it could be that your device is getting decent signal from the router (ie you see good signal strength) but it is failing to return the signal back to the router.

In layman's term, you (Laptop/PC) and an opera singer (wifi router) stand on opposites sides of field, you can hear the opera singer clearly but opera singer cannot hear a word you are shouting back. (wifi antennae is is normally much more powerful than on a laptop/pc etc)

In the above case you need a repeater or mesh, a bigger beefier router is not going do much as your laptop cant send the signals back to the new router

Finally how many wifi ssd do you see, if you are in a high rise apartment you might have 20 or more SSiD blasting away which would be drowning out your wifi.

Check the menu of your router, it might have the ability to use a different channels.

between 2 wireless laptops? or between a wireless and a NAS device?

Wireless performance between 2 wireless devices on the same AP is going to be rubbish. Performance will be half of a half of the total performance. Your device sends a packet AP receives it, re-sends it to another client, the client replies to the AP and then to your device so air time is just killed.

honestly if your copying files just plug a cable in.

    One bedroom apartment.

Both laptops are within 4 meters of the Huawei DG8245v.

Zero, both laptops are in the living room.

both laptops are 46mb down and 22 up.

    about 25 to 30 SSIDs

I still couldn't get in... I forgot my ps

    ouch

All wireless acts as noise for all other wireless, make sure your on 5g or 6ghz if you have it, and you are on a channel that has as low as signal power from other SSIDs as possible. If you have an android phone something like wifi analyser can help show them. Ignore 2.4ghz its going to be bad already.

It doesn't appear that you are on the 5g band just the 2.4. That is the only reason for those speeds.

Seeing as they are laptops... You could always just put them next to the router and plug them in when you need to do any large data transfers, alternatively a Samsung T7 portable ssd or something could be a solution.

A decent wifi 6 router should get you at least 500 but more likely 600-700 wireless speeds in the apartment if the laptops etc support it.

I think in this case an upgrade would make a significant improvement. Operating on 5 GHz spectrum would help a lot.

Plugging both laptops in with a cable would be best.

Change your access point to only use 5ghz wifi (turn off 2.4) and reduce the channel width to 20Mhz.

They've lost the password for the router. epictetus there is probably a factory reset procedure you can use, to get back to the defaults. The quote above is worth a try.

LOL ok, factory reset the thing. If you can't figure that out then maybe rethink your whole 'getting certs in things'. Home user routers are about as basic as not sticking knives in power sockets.

    Perhaps.
But we all started from nothing at some point.

Yes, I have considered that option, but it wasn't worth the risk in case I am not able to get my modem/router back in an operational order so I left it as it is.

I will buy a new and more powerful router to experiment and learn networking etc and leave the Huawei as it is to minimise the risks as not having internet connection would be detrimental to my productivity.

Umm.... Setting up a Router is really easy thing, should take less than10mins especially with the set up wizards, like even I can do it.. I have moved away from all in one solutions as the places I live in have grown..

An all in one is about ease of use set it up once and forget about it (but not the password tho write that down somewhere.)

i understand it is easy. But I can't take that risk as there is no nothing to roll back to if something goes wrong.

This is standard IT practice... There is no way IT department would okay a change request if there is nothing to roll back to. Why would I take the same risk at home?

I will wait until I get a more new and more powerful router, that I get an upgrade in speed and also have my current huawei as a backup if I can't set up my new router correctly.

As you have stated you have your old router to fall back on....
