    Hi guys,
I am wondering how much harddrive space do you have left until you buy another harddrive, how often do you buy them and in what size do you buy them in?

Ever since i got into animes, my harddrives are filling up like crazy... Last year (2009) i bought a total of 3 hard drives (2tb total) just to be able to get more animes and movies to stream around the house. Deleting them or compressing them more is not an option. And now, i almost filled up the 1tb which i bought a few months ago (100gb left).... Anyone else having this problem?

I buy more when my total capacity is around 90% full.

I buy whatever is the best bang for buck at the time (most GB per $).

That's a good excuse to go buy a NAS or build a file server. ;)

    Two options:

    • If you've got a spare channel, grab a SATA->IDE converter

    • PCI SATA controller - they aren't too expensive.

I don't buy HDD's based on free space, i buy them based on age. I generally buy at least twice the size of my last one so i usually end up with shitloads of free space

IDE slot is taken and so is all the PCI slots as i got 2 massive video card and a sound card

I think my antec 900 can't take anymore harddrives because of the video cards which blocks off access to 2 harddrive space...Maybe its time i get a new case or a NAS enclosure

A NAS or small server might look expensive at first but when you look at the cost over a longer period (i.e. since you don't need any other parts for awhile once it's setup, and don't have tons of external drives and stuff lying about) it is a good option.

I got a 1tb+160gb dedicated to backup of important data and it still has plenty of space left... so im good. And i got offsite backup of my movies and animes.

wats the minimal spec of a small server?

If you don't care about anything but space then any second hand parts would do, as long as it has some SATA ports and slots for another controller, and space inside the case for as many drives as you need, then the spec doesn't really matter.

If you went for new gear you could get one of the ultra low voltage semprons for $40 or whatever, motherboard for $80, some RAM for $60, then all you need is a case and the drives.

You could pack 6 to 10 drives into a server that costs less than ~300 or so to build pretty easily I think.

    lol @ STUdog

i start looking around the 95% mark.... but also at that point I also look at purchasing a diffrent set of drives, like upgrading from 500 - 1.5's

I work out what drive to buy based on price per GB. At the moment 1.5tb drives are 50% more than 1tb drives, so get the 1.5tb as its the same value but gives you more space for the same single sata port.

I've replaced all my 120GB/320GB drives with 1-1.5TB drives, they were getting old, I needed more space anyway. If you have smaller than 1tb drives, replace them before you run out of ports.
