Apologies/delete if this counts as selling, but does anyone have a use for a Gen8 chassis with no motherboard? Going in the electronics recycling otherwise!

I think coyoterun should definitely get it, as he has come out and used up only his second post in 10 years to ask for it. ;):)

Just trying to save it from the dump. Now I have three and microherder has five so I'm catching up now! ;)[IMG]
Seriously I am in Texas, so trash it.

Late to the party but is anyone still running one of these?

I just picked up a marketplace tech bundle with an N54L in it with a 250gb SSD & 4 x 2TB drives in it so figured this may be useful for my first home server.

I'm not looking to do anything too technical but end goal is to setup my own file server for home PC file backup & mobile phone photo backup so I can avoid paying microsoft $14/M for an office 365 subscription which I have for only onedrive.

I'm ok with working on PCs but have never touched a server before so am a total beginner there. I've read True NAS is a good option but watching youtube how to videos for setup ideas delve straight into the technical side.

Two quick questions - is the N54L capable for what I'm after? And if so, do I go the True NAS route? Of just install windows? Or is there another viable user friendly OS?

TrueNAS is fine, but for your use case I’d just pay the money for Unraid. It’s far more beginner friendly, especially on one of these microservers.

Yes it's capable of what you want. How much ram did it come with? Mine has 8gb. I'm running Ubuntu Linux, with zfs for my 4x 4tb disks in raidz1 +128gb SSD as cache, and another 128gb SSD as the Ubuntu OS drive (there's a simple firmware mod to allow turning the optical drive bay/ports into another general SATA port). I run Owncloud on it to do that cloud storage replacement. But I've got another n54l chassis that I've gutted and put an n100 board in. It's running Nextcloud on Ubuntu and has a similar disk layout.

I'm biased to Ubuntu because it's what I knew at the time of install. But I'm about to be doing a new NAS build for a mate, and was looking at Truenas for that because I like ZFS.

Danyell's zimaOS tip looks good though too, so now that's on my list!

I would avoid windows, it'll likely run like a dog on hardware this old unless you do some stripping/optimising. (I'm a Linux fanboy though, so biases may be apparent)

    Cheers.

It has 8gb ram - I've installed true nas as a start & have gotten as far as it giving me an IP address so looks like it's working.

Today's plan is to try and set up some basic pools and check everything works
