    Hi boys and gals,

Thought I would show a quick comparision with Vantage to show how gpu scores increase with sli/tri sli, and if the cpu is a limiting factor.

    System
    i7 920
    Gigabyte X58 Extreme bios F4i
    OCZ 6GB(2GBx3) 1333 i7 edition
3 x GIGABYTE GTX 280 (just standard clocks)
    Zalman 1000w-HP
All installed in Mountain Mod Horizon case

    STOCK CPU, 1 GTX 280
    [IMG]

    4GHZ CPU, 1 GTX 280
    [IMG]

    STOCK CPU, 2 GTX 280
    [IMG]

    4GHZ CPU, 2 GTX 280
    [IMG]

    STOCK CPU, 3 GTX 280
    [IMG]

    4GHZ CPU, 3 GTX 280
    [IMG]

    SUMMARY
    [IMG]

As we can see from the results above,
    • i7 at stock is Slightly holding back 2 GTX 280's from running at full speed

    • i7 at stock IS holding back 3 GTX 280's from running at full speed.
    • i7 at 4GHZ isn't holding back 3 GTX 280's.

Note: I have put my EK water Block on GTX 280 I got from dinos22 but is running at stock for these tests:D Thanks well packed.

    The other 2 GTX 280 I got from banny:316 - Best packaged items I've ever recieved:thumbup:

But the sad:( thing is: I will have to say good bye 2 of these GTX 280, as xmas has cost me more than I wanted it to. So I have put these on ebay, but if I get a decent offer from here I will pull them and sell them to someone here.

Its sad as I ordered 2 more water blocks for these, but such is life:(

I think for tri sli, even a 4ghz was holding it back,

plus i only got a 22" so bit of a waste

I like your case, yeah so 2x GTX 280 SLI doesn't seem to be cpu limited at stock,a tiny bit but not much, but I can see where 3x GTX 280 trisli really gets a desent boost from the overclocked cpu.

Thanks that gives a clear picture of it all.

    great set up!

All you need is 4870x2 cross fire and see the difference. Interested in trade for 280gtx? :D

imo, the 4GHz i7 is holding back the three 280's, going off the exponential increase in fps as you dump more cards in it and overclock the CPU.

10-15fps increase in the GPU tests in the last test with the CPU overclock, i'd say there's more where that came from :) Only way you can be sure is by taking it over 4GHz though :leet:

Cool tests. Thanks for sharing :D

Nice tests mate, i ran similar tests but only tried 1 gtx on vantage and than 3xgtx didnt bother with the 2nd.

Im sure if you overclocked the i7 to say 4.5ghz you might get a little more out of tri sli but not a whole lot more.

It will be interesting to see if quad sli is viable with the new gtx 295 on a x58 high end setup.

p.s crysis still isnt playable on my rig with max aa at 2560x1600 i think the video cards need more ram 1gig doesnt cut it.

I think a quad sli 295 setup would cater better to crysis with max aa and all settings maxed out .

If they are EK Acetals and you have the RAM backplate too i might be able to give one a good home

thats one insane system man would love to have the cash to have a rig like that :) sucks this year with cash flow all over and that is sad to see you have to part with 2 280's. Great test wish I could find one like it for the e8400 and maybe with 260's, really helps show where the bottleneck hits, would have being great if ya had more time and could have put cod4, crysis ect through the test. Great stuff anyhow :)

hmm time will tell, i have a feeling it wont make a difference as i think the problem is ram limitations.

Can you also include a graph of "real-world benefits vs bank balance" as you increase the number of cards?
