So which generations and or models are affected by this or is it just every intel cpu ever made?

Anything in the last 10 years apparently, but slow downs won't be as bad in the more recent chips.

    Anyone examined the kernel changes?
Are they likely to be backportable for those on LTS/RHEL style distros (RHEL still being on 3.10)?

Should be optional really, a tick box yes I understand my computer could be compromised but please let it run 30% faster in some workloads. Especially for those either not online permanently, not running virtualisation etc.

    Good games don't seem impacted.

It's a kernel boot option on Linux, as for Windows... Well knowing MS these days, it'll be forced down your throat whether you like it or not.

AMD engineer has stated that they dont allow ring 3 based speculation to pull ring 0 data, permissions are checked first.

It appears that Intel allows this type of speculation and then invalidates once it fails permission check, but this opens up a window where there is a cache line/tlb entry that shouldn't be there and that can then be exploited.

Given that its still under NDA's we will just have to wait and see what the exact exploit is......

Fair point. Seems validation at Intel have slipped to make schedules. Commentary from various ex-Intel folk - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16058920 - but could also be happening at AMD.
