So the system spec will be:

    Case: (budget) $200
    PSU: Corsair SF600 Gold 600W SFX $185
    Mobo: B450M MORTAR MAX $149
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X $515
GPU: PowerColor Radeon RX 5700 XT Red Dragon 8GB $699 [purchased!]
    RAM: 32Gb (2x16GB) Ballistix Sport LT $265
SSD: ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD $445
    Case fan: Noctua A12x25-PWM 120mm Fan $59
Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Thermal Grease 1g $9
So call it $2,526 plus ??? in shipping.

    less card already purchased -$699

NEW TOTAL $1.827 (doesn't sound so bad now eh ) ROFL

    ( prices from PCCaseGear )

If Wraith cooler proves too noisy or inadequate I'll get a
Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 Low Profile AM4 CPU Cooler $65 or
Noctua NH-L12S Low Profile Multi Socket CPU Cooler $99
(not sure which one is best / suitable)

Solid build mate. With respect to the cooler though, I would definitely consider the Noctua NH-L9X65 as a better option.

The Wraith Prism is inadequate for an 8 core if you plan on working it hard IMHO. It's OK, and not especially loud, until its under stress though. I used to have one on my 1700, it was 'adequate' for the 1700, which comes with a Spire rather than the Prism, but the Noctua would have been better. The Spire was definitely not good enough for the 1700 but the Prism was OK.

I'm currently rocking a massive bequiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 on my 2700X, and running it at 100% 24/7 (@ 4300 MHz using PBO) as I use it for Seti@home and Asteroids@home, and temps sit in the 60's in a very well ventilated case, just to give you an idea. Thats a 250W cooler, much more than a Prism. You'll want the best cooler you can fit in your case, a Prism is not the best option IMHO.

Certainly try the Prism for awhile though and make your own decision, as at least it is effectively free with the CPU.

I'd also recommend bequiet! Pure Wings 2 for case fans instead of the Noctua you are considering. At $15 its a bargain, just as good as the Noctua but so much cheaper.

Thanks I thought the 12 might be a better option as it has a 120mm fan? But I guess the one you showed has more fins so... ?

I also notice the bequiet! Pure Wings 2 fan is not a PWM fan which is probably part of the reason for the lower cost. (3 pin as opposed to Noctua 4 pin)

Its a tough decision since Noctua don't provide TDP or DB numbers with their coolers, but the NH-L9X65 is nicely compact, doesn't have any clearance problems and works really well. Try the Prism first though, you may find its enough for your purposes, and costs nothing.

So seeing what was available locally at umart I've found this spec which is the same price at PCCaseGear but I can pick it up from umart (no freight) !

    Case: (budget) $200 (from elsewhere)
GPU: PowerColor Radeon RX 5700 XT Red Dragon 8GB $699 [purchased!]

    ---

PSU: Corsair SF600 Platinum 600W SFX
    Mobo: B450M MORTAR MAX
    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
    RAM: 32Gb (2x16GB) Ballistix Sport LT 3200 MHz <-- should I go faster ?
SSD: ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 2TB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD
Case fan: Noctua A12x25-PWM 120mm Fan
    CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9X65

The RAM is the right choice. 3600 is the sweet spot for Ryzen, and those sticks overclock easily to c16-3600 using the Ryzen DRam Calculator. The best value ram on the market, stick with them. I'm not guessing here, I have had those exact sticks, and they are great.

I only have the Samsung B-Dies because I had a spare set and they will run at c14, but at double the cost, not worth the money.

Sorry, unless I have missed something, why are we buying a B450 mobo with a 3000 series Ryzen chip? I get Forest Whittaker eye everytime I see people doing this.

EDIT: Oh shit, so there are NO mATX AM4 boards in a non houso chipset?

Yeah they have pretty much ignored the mATX format which REALLY annoys the piss out of me - because obviously if they did offer a decent 570 - and an affordable price - I'd be buying it. The way I look at it I can always upgrade to a new mobo later if they offer a worthwhile option.

    regards,
    Ghost Dog.

    Hi All

    I'm in a similar boat.
Except i'll be upgrading from the i5 7600k.
Is the 3800x still the best value amd cpu?

Any thought around if i were to upgrade now?
My main reason for upgrading is red dead redemption 2 runs like a nugget.

3700X is the one you want if you want bang for buck 8-core.

Nothing wrong with Asrock. Just too expensive for an mATX

Too expensive yep but it won't get any cheaper any time soon given the paucity of options.

It certainly ticks all the boxes, but jeez $$$

Yeah unfortunately is commands the X570 tax plus the "there's nothing else out there" tax. :(

    Yep B450M $149
    X570 $315
That a difference of $166 so more than double.
The problem then is that yif you get an X570 there's little point unless you then invest in PCIE4 compatible devices and 4200 memory etc ... which will jack up the system price again substantially.

    A review: https://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/asrock_x570m_pro4_review,20.html

It's tempting but I reckon I could think of better places to apply those $.

Just buy it. You don't want CJ to think you're a houso, do you?
