    Hi All.

Looking at getting an iPad. Trying to convince myself to get a Wi-Fi only version to save money especially since there is only NextG in my area and I most likely wouldn't use the 3G anyway.

Hopefully this will help any future shoppers.

Surely only you can know whether you need 3G or not?

Yes. The end choice is still mine. Someone may come along and say "I got the 3G version and I haven't used the 3G component once, waste of money"

I honestly don't think it's worth getting without the 3G. I got an iPod Touch a couple of years ago because I didn't think that I'd need the mobile internet that the iPhone offered, boy was I wrong. I'm glad I learnt from that mistake when I got my iPad.

Got the 32g 3G and love it as I use it on the train, 2 hours a day, to and from work.

It's better to have and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

At launch, all the carriers had micro SIM data plans starting from $15 for 1GB/month, with no ongoing contracts (things might have changed now), which is fairly cheap for accessing wireless data.

I suppose it depends on what you intend to use the ipad for. It has a variety of uses, and I'm sure each user uses it differently. At one stage while travelling, I used it as a glorified GPS/map in unknown area - and was glad to have 3G. If it were a Wifi only model, it would be restricted to around the home use, or specifically carried to wifi hotspots like the local Maccas or cafe joint with wifi. For the latter, it's convenient as it's thinner than a dedicated laptop (maybe comparable in portability with a netbook, I dunno as I don't own one).

But yeah, take into consideration the extra cost for the 3G model versus wifi only; but IMO the convenience factor is worth it. Even if you decide not to use 3G, you can take out the SIM and/or disable it and use it wifi only. But for the occasion(s) where 3G is needed, you won't be regreting not having it.

i got 16gb wifi = happy... if i lost it i would probably get the 16gb 3g but wifi only is fine... I initially went with this model just to dip my toes... theory being if i never used it again no biggy... if i needed 3g i would just trickledown my wifi model to the missus...

im actually surprised at how little space ive used up - no songs on it as ive got a mega ipod... i shuffle 2 or 3gb worth of video and replace it once watched - still got about 10gb free...

I've got a 32gb 3g and I'm very happy with my purchase, although I've only got 3 or 4gb of storage left I wouldn't be able to get through everything on there in a day if i tried, it's nice having choice but I find there is only so much music/video that you can watch in a single sitting.

    i decided on the 3g + wifi 64g

overall im pleased with it, had the money to stretch to the top model and thought, for that bit extra, id rather have the extra space and the 3g capabilities, but thats me personally

id make the decision based on what you need out of the ipad, from its size to its connection capabilities, nothing worse than forking over 650+ to realise a month down the track it would have been nicer to have more space or 3g to make the most out of your own experience

I only spend about 2 hours away from wifi each day while I travel between work to home, and trying to go online on my train line is just a frustrating waste of time as it has constant black spots. There's so much offline content on my iPad that I've never once wished for internet access while using it while I'm out, and not being tied into yet another wallet-draining SIM contract is awesome.

Nothing worse? How about that $650 + a 12 month data plan contract which you end up barely using.

    No use for it?

If you sell soon you should get most of your cash back.

I'm this guy but with the 64GB. Glad I got the 3G, even happier with the telstra micro sim. Don't get those pesky black spots anymore that I did with Optus / Virgin on my 3G iPhone!

i think will be more realistic poll with couple more option:

    - Don't have one and I am happy without.
    - Don't have one and I wish I got one.

    Poll

Where's the poll option: I don't want an iPad because it's a waste of money if you don't have a second computer.
