OCAU Iron Chef Rules and Discussion Thread

    This month's theme is: Almonds

Time for another OCAU Iron Chef! Take note of the dates:

    Open date: Friday 14th August 2009 - 6pm
Close date: Sunday 23rd August 2009 - Midnight

    RULES
    - The theme ingredient must be used in the dish
    - No entries accepted before or after opening and closing dates
    - you MUST submit photographs of you preparing the dish as proof that you cooked it. At least four pictures, one of which has your OCAU username on it.
    - make sure that your post complies with the geek food guidelines.

    JUDGING
As per previous iron chefs, there will be two polls.

The entrants only poll is open only to people who have submitted entries to OCAU Iron Chef August. At the close of the competition, PM your vote (3, 2, 1) to Ma Baker. You may not vote for yourself. The winner of the entrants poll is considered to be the winner of Iron Chef June, and has the right to select the theme ingredient for the next Iron Chef.

The people's choice poll is open to everyone on OCAU to vote.

Lots of choices this time people, it'll be interesting to see what you all come up with. Starts tomorrow night!

This is gonna be exciting! :D

Why is it that the weeks they fall on are always bad for me? My junior cake decorating class has reached the stage where I need to bake many mudcakes, and we all know how long they take to cook... don't think I'll have too much oven space for a while! But I'm pretty sure I'll only need it for one element of my dish(es?) so it's just a matter of coordination.

I am looking forward to putting up pics of my cake decorating class' finished pieces - it's pretty impressive what a bunch of 12 year olds can do with icing!

Hmm, dosent look like I will be able to make an entry this time around due to money and work which is a shame because I love almonds!, I thought I'd hand over my ideas incase anyone was short of concepts:
    Almond Baklava
Almond, spinach, and ricotta spanokopta (Filo pasty)
Paris Brest (Large wheel of Choux pastry filled with creme patissiere and almond praline, covered with roasted almonds)
    Almond Biscoti
    Almond mud cake
    Almond Gianduia
    Almond Praline Gelato
    Amigthalota (Greek almond biscuits)
Indian Pilau (Saffron Basmati rice with almonds and dried fruit)
Lamb Korma (Lamb in a almond and/or cashew sauce)
    Pani Puri with almond paste
    Marzipan
Dual layer almond and pistacio marzipan on a gianduia biscuit base (See below)

Anyhow, I had planned to serve the spankopta, lamb korma, baklava, and almond&pistacio marzipan snaps, but time wasnt with me on this one!.

Argh! My ideas are getting poached! Serves me right for doing all the other baking I needed to get done, but also my "stuff" needs to sit for a few days. Better get on to it! :D

Your ideas are getting poached? Funny that, the entries so far seem to be baked not poached :p

There's usually a longer period between when its announced and when its due up, and I dont have time to fit in a shop sadly.

Looks like this month's Iron Chef isn't so popular ... :( Maybe we should start increasing the length of time between Iron Chefs to 2 monthly? Or maybe I should stop entering :)

^ Haven't submitted my entry yet (started making it on Sunday, maybe I'll be able to finish it tomorrow, we'll see ;)) and there's stil a few days for other people. I think having a longer length oftime between announcement and commencement would help people out a bit though.

Yeah, that would have been very handy for me, I have to schedule my shops a week or two ahead (The joy of not owning a car!)
