Due to low turnout there will only be a public vote for this Iron Chef

OCAU Iron Chef Rules and Discussion Thread

Easter this year means a five-day weekend, so to take advantage of that, OCAU is holding another Iron Chef!

The theme for this month's Iron Chef is ....

    OCAU Iron Chef Easter

    Take note of the dates:

Open date: Friday 22nd April 06:00am
Close date: Sun 1st May 11.59pm

    RULES
    - Only ONE dish is to be prepared
    - The theme must be referenced in the dish. You can opt for a dish that you typically cook at easter, take advantage of all the available chocolate and seafood, or cook something of cultural/traditional significance to you. As it is that time of the year, you may also submit a dish with the theme ANZAC. If that is open to loose interpretation, please explain your thought process in selecting the dish you choose for submission.
    - No entries accepted before or after opening and closing dates
    - you MUST submit photographs of you preparing the dish as proof that you cooked it. At least four pictures, one of which has your OCAU username on it.
    - make sure that your post complies with the geek food guidelines.

    JUDGING
As per some of the previous iron chefs, there will be two polls.

The entrants only poll is open only to people who have submitted entries to OCAU Iron Chef Easter. At the close of the competition, PM your vote (1st, 2nd, 3rd) to Ma Baker. You may not vote for yourself. The winner of the entrants poll is considered to be the winner of this month's Iron Chef.

The people's choice poll is open to everyone on OCAU to vote.

Hmmmm...tempted to enter it, but I'm not back for easter til tuesday, and then I'm off to the US on the 2nd!

Let me think about what to do.

(Amfibius, I still love looking at that Turducken - can you post up somewhere how exactly you should post up how you "crisped up the skin with some hot oil"?)

edit: the main reason I struggle to enter these competitions is actually taking the photos while cooking - I've always got food all over my hands, and crap everywhere in the kitchen!!

Hi Tekin, it's very easy :) Place the turducken on a roasting rack with a tray underneath. Heat up 1L of oil till it's about 200C. Now CAREFULLY ladle oil over the bird (making sure your ladle is absolutely dry!). It will hiss and spit hot oil everywhere, so make sure you wear long sleeves, eye protection, and gloves. If you want more browning, a good trick is to set aside some basting fluid, add lots of sugar to it, then brush it on the skin before ladling the oil. The sugar will caramelize and give you a beautiful golden finish.

Hah - I figure your definition of 'very easy' is slightly different to mine!!

    *grin*

I've done it that way with smaller birds (ducks mostly) I was wondering whether you had a cunning strategy around it that didn't involve the possibility of third degree burns!

With the turducken I made for last xmas I just had it in the weber for 4 hours, then cranked up the BBQ to high and put it on a spit in there for the last 10 minutes, covering it in a sugar solution. That worked pretty well, but compared to your pictures...well, i was a bit jealous.

Changing topics...is it wrong to be thinking about a Rabbit recipe for Iron Chef Easter?

    Not at all! :D

If I am up to making it, I have come up with a suitably exciting egg recipe. I am really tempted to push myself, coz it would be a lot of fun!

I was thinking of nailing a gingerbread man to a cross. After all, Jesus did say "take this bread and eat it for it is my body" (Matt 26:26). But I think I would offend too many people if I did that!! :Paranoid:

At risk of sounding a little tight, I think that potentially offensive material should be avoided where possible. :Pirate:

as long as its not a bearded gingerbread man you'll be right Amphibius
There's enough politics in our society. Offense is only taken if ppl choose to be offended.

I'm sure what ever you do it will be amazing as usual.
For myself its a meal that the host doesnt have to run around on the day to much. Am looking forward to a quiet beer followed by some nice reds later on :leet:
