    Hey Guys,

    In my new place I have a home theatre room which is all well and good.

    In my lounge room im looking for something I can hook up to the TV just to make the sound better that can also double up as a speaker I can move around the house if need be or take outside if I have people over. Currently the Play 5 gen 2 is only sale for 600 and just want to know if its worth it or if there is anything better.

    Thanks!

    if you were to connect the headphone socket of your tv to it you can probably use your tv remote to control the volume. However if you cant, then welcome to volume control hell. I'll explain;

    Youre watching your favourite show when someone calls you. You want to mute the TV sound to take the call. You then realise that in order to do that, you must;
    1. Hang up on the incoming call
    2. Open the sonos app
    3. wait for it to connect (usually about 10 seconds)
    4. Select the zone/room you want to control
    5. mute the volume
    6. Sigh in frustration
    7. then once this is done you can call the person back.
    In short: If its not a sound bar or an AV receiver, it probably wont have 5.1 sound processing to correctly playback the audio, and it may not have a remote for volume control and therefore shouldn't be connected to a TV.

    Holy hell I didn't even think about that.
    I think ill look at another avenue lol.

    I might just get a Bluetooth speaker for outside and use my spare amp with a 2.1 setup instead.

    Thanks for the reply!

    I've used my Sony SRS-ZR5 speaker, which is Sony's version of the Sonos, connected to a TV successfully. It has an hdmi ARC connection which allows volume control from the TV.

    The play 5 has a 3.5mm input on the back.

    I already covered this option is my first post as per above quote. Op would have to use headphone socket on tv and if that’s not possible then forget about the play 5

    Play 5 has a 3.5mm jack.

    Also, get a Sonos Beam, not a Play 5.

    I think most phones you don't have to hang up to use apps, they run in the back ground. So pretty accurate it you remove steps 1 & 7. Although OP could also walk out of them room.
    You could also press pause on the sonos itself that would "pause" the line in stream it.

    Long story short - it's still not convenient. I send getting a sonos beam

    I have now moved onto a different option.

    Run 2.1 in my lounge and run ceiling speakers in the alfresco from zone 2 lol.

    Its a bit more expensive but will be a better result.

    So now im on the hunt for some weather proof in ceiling speakers

    If you wont get them wet and dont live within 3 km of waterfront then you dont really need weather proof.
    if you need it, buy these:
