But what possible purpose could they have (apart from being annoying)*?? It not like WP is a buisness that will lose money. Maybe someone got in the penalty box, or had bad aura... "if i can't have it, no-one can!!! <insert daibolical laughter here>"

*i'm not disagreeing with you IAC security, just ranting generally

    Really?
So there is rent-a-crowd for your protest events, and rent-a-botnet-army when you aren't happy with your little e-world. What does something like this cost?
What do they do, walk into the local russian cyber-cafe and order a strong flat white, chocolate muffin; Oh and tell Vald I need a 175GB ddos for Tuesday the 29th - all to go, thanks.

If the ddos attack does happen indefinitely, what steps would be taken to try and avoid that?

Block countries via ip? only allow Aus ip's?

Squeeze the pipe at the other end - at the source.

Nah, it's only Whirlpool after all.
Which makes you think further into the question, why Whirlpool? A practice run maybe?
It's visible enough beyond Australia, tastes the right flavour - it's in the IT sector with good backing i.e. bulletproof & internode. It'd be a fair test wouldn't it?

Actually, no it isn't PBX Info is also inaccessable and has been as long as Whirlpool has been having problems. I was wondering whether this was related to the major outage Telstra had in Victoria yesterday?

Bot's are simply computers hijacked by virus/trojan/rootkit and you cannot simply ban a country or limit IP range to Australia... well maybe it would help as the amount of bots hitting the site would be greatly reduced.

Damn its annoying not having access to whirlpool.... really needed something from there, is there an archive/cache site to view pages from 2 years ago?

Thanks Blinky but its in a particular post in May/June 2008 and waybackmachine doesnt have that cached, or it would be quite hard to find (had a look just now).

Having just seen the tweet that it will be offline all day, I think the cool thing is that we will find in a day or two it simply won't have mattered...

Minor inconvenience for the moment, but after a fairly robust thread, soon locked by the mods (the last one ironically locked just after I posted joking about posting in my birthday suit, talk about an unpleasant mental image to finish on) everything will, innevitably, return to complete normality.

The userbase and traffic won't be affected substantially I'm quite certain, and it's not a commercial company that can be impacted by lost sales/revenue for an extended period of downtime.

Agreed. I do have a hilarious image of the 'attacker' stood in his bedroom, stamping his feet, yelling "But you're supposed to be angry, WHY AREN'T YOU ANGRY!!"

Enough with the bitching and bagging of Whirlpool userbase.
Anyone that continues will earn themselves a ban.
