    Hello
I have been unable to start MySQL using a guide like:
    http://www.debianadmin.com/xampp-all-in-one-web-server-installation-and-configuration-in-debian.html

I cant start anything which uses XAMP + MySQL because it cannot find the service. http://localhost/xampp status says MySQL is deactivated.

    Code:
    XAMPP Status

    Component
    Status
    Hint
    	MySQL database DEACTIVATED
    	PHP ACTIVATED
    	Perl ACTIVATED
    	Common Gateway Interface (CGI) ACTIVATED
    	Server Side Includes (SSI) ACTIVATED

Yet when i start XAMPP this component says it is working:

    Code:
    /opt/lampp/lampp start
    Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.6.6...
XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP5)...
    XAMPP: Starting MySQL...
    XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD...
    XAMPP for Linux started.

At first i thought it was the firewall so i changed iptables:

    Code:
    #allow MySQL Default port:
    iptables -A TRUSTED -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3306 -j ACCEPT

However this does not seem to affect the situation.
Moreover the configuration file for mySQL in /opt/lampp/etc/my.cnf
is the same as the default configuration file.

I should be able to use a content creation program like joomla to create a database.

    Code:

    Pre-installation check for Joomla! 1.5.3 Production/Stable [ Vahi ] 22-April-2008 22:00 GMT:
If any of these items is not supported (marked as No) your system does not match the minimum requirements necessary. Please take the appropriate actions to correct the errors. Failure to do so could lead to your Joomla! installation not functioning correctly.
    PHP Version >= 4.3.10 	Yes
    - Zlib Compression Support Yes
    - XML Support Yes
    - MySQL Support Yes
    MB Language is Default Yes
    MB String Overload Off Yes
    configuration.php Writable Yes

    Code:

    An Error has occurred!:

Could not connect to the database. Connector returned number: Unable to connect to the database:Could not connect to MySQL

I am assuming this problem traces back to XAMPP not starting MySQL or there is some step to be done before all of this to configure mySQL which is not mentinoned in any tutorials i have found so far.

update: it seems to all be related to permissions. I reinstalled XAMPP and its fine. Looking at posts on various forum all related to issues to do with permissions. I solved about 10 and still had issues starting MySQL.

update: 2 days later and the problem has not occured again since i reinstalled XAMPP. I dont know enough about what was going on to work out what was wrong however i am happy the problem cleared up.
