Official announcement from Apple says iTunes is done. Thank Christ for that.

Question is though, what will come next.

Apple announces plans to shut down the iconic platform iTunes

No doubt there will be some other control mechanism. Closed ecosystem is what they are all about.

I too have spent thousands on music, movies etc. on the iTunes store over the years. I see problems here.

Apple stops updates for IOS devices which have ceased production for more than 2 years.
That means whatever they replace iTunes with wont be available for most existing IOS hardware.

Isn't Apple's music content meant to be DRM-free, which implies it can be moved/synced to anywhere?

Looks like it's going to be split across services, Music, TV and Podcasts.

They're never going to leave you in the lurch, everyone would be in uproar.

I've had no end of issues with it when it comes to music.....and it's part of the reason I left Apple for an Android phone....I'd literally had enough of it.

Good. It's a nightmare to manage from an IT Support perspective. It was ridiculous that Users HAD to have it to sync their phones/devices when they didn't need half the services that were forced onto them, and just brought up unnecessary management overhead.

And how many people have quicktime installed just because iTunes installs it at the same time?

I have to say, music management on Apple is the worst experience in the world compared to Android.

It's been a while, but I remember just dragging music files (any format) to anywhere on my phone, and the music player of my choice just figured it out and it was there. So awesome.
