appreciate the comments guys - the PP on #9 was really a save job as it was shot through a filthy hotel window - ended up coming out quite well though :)

forgive my ignorance.. but what's with the face masks? Is air quality an issue there, or is it a political statement or something?

Its a few different things - in Japan its mainly when you are sick (stop spreading your nasty germs around - the masks most people wear won't stop germs getting in though), or it can help a little in hayfever season.

I was never 100% sure if the people wearing the masks were protecting themselves from others, or protecting others from themselves

Last pic reminds me of Metropolis (the old old film).

    Generally protecting others from themselves.

In a society where so many people are in contact with each other and in such confined spaces, it could be catastrophic to spread disease.

The flu is going gangbusters this year - I've already had two varients around Christmas time, almost killed myself walking up and down stairs :Paranoid:

I'm still not sure what to think of the photos - I see too many Japan photos that are on here that are fine as tourist shots, but don't really do anything for me. I'd have to find it, but we have had some amazing photos at the same time.

2-3-4 and 9 are my favorites. 9 a little because I find Japan as a country that is trapped in its past - the BW and slight distortion of contrast gives an interesting effect to a modern city. 2 is nice and balanced, but not all that interesting. 3 would probably work much better in color and cropped to just show Komokuten on his own - the detail is incredible and the more we can see the better. 4 I just like the look on their faces :p

any chance of a high quality picture of the first or last picture?
you can put a tag on it but if possible put it where the start bar will cover it up.
