So.. Looks like I am visiting Japan with a mate in early November, flying into Tokyo.
I haven't properly taken a look at things to do, I guess I will get to that soon.

I've noticed that the final round of Super Formula is racing in Suzuka on the 8th November, anyone going? or interested in taking a look?

Sounds like you're interested in cars if you've looked into racing. Tokyo Motor Show is on that time too.

Thanks Sheezy, I'll be sure to check it out. Just have to work on convincing my non-enthusiast mate that its worth seeing.

I'll have to try and tee something up with Chainbolt when things become a little more concrete

If you are interested in cars, Tokyo Motorshow would be interesting. The venue (Tokyo Big Sight),is easy to reach from downtown. The public days are from Oct. 29 to Nov. 8.

Good. I see the venue (Tokyo Big Sight) while I write this. I will go by bike. Not decided yet when. My recommendation: Avoid the first weekend after opening (31 October/1st November). You won't see any cars and bikes, only people. :p

Ah, Fuji Speedway, my favorite race track. Takes between 70 to 90 minutes from downtown Tokyo. Around 80% driving is on highway.

Copy that. I think the missus has actually picked up some of the preview tickets.

The preview days are the best! I think it's Wednesday and Thursday.

    Hi all,

Wife and I are going to Japan over Christmas (only leave we can take).

    Itinerary is:
    Arrive in Sapporo 25th December
    Travel to Asahikawa 28th December
Fly to Tokyo 30th December - 3rd January
Travel to Mount Fuji - 3rd January
Travel to Kyoto - 4th January
Travel to Osaka - 5th January
    Home on the 8th.

My question to fellow OCAU'ers is it cheaper to buy the JR pass or do something else like buy the Hokkaido pass and pay as we go after we get to Tokyo?
I can't seem to figure out how to get to Kyoto from my Fuji. Sort of regretting buying flights to Tokyo, but we thought the train would be slower then flying and we don't want to lose time.

    Thanks.

Whereabouts are you staying near Mt Fuji?

A few years back we went from Kyoto to Tokyo via Hakone for a view of Mt Fuji, and we used JR from Kyoto->Odawara, then Hakone Free Pass to go from Odawara to our hotel near Togendai.

Although be aware that the Hakone ropeway isn't currently running due to volcano..

I doubt that a JR pass will pay for itself, given your itinerary. You can check train prices at http://www.hyperdia.com/ to make sure

    Hi All,

I just wanted to ask for some information on Hokkaido.

We would like to see the autumn colours in Hokkaido next year. For those that have visited Hokkaido during the Northern Autumn, how long do you think would be ideal?

We are thinking of hiring a car and driving from location to location at a leisurely pace.

We are into landscapes and hiking. We will also have 2 toddlers (4 and 6 years old) on the trip.

Okay so we have a rough plan now

    30-Nov Tokyo Sleep
    1-Dec Tokyo
    2-Dec Tokyo
    3-Dec Tokyo
    4-Dec Kyoto Kyoto Half Day
    5-Dec Kyoto Kyoto Full Day
    6-Dec Kyoto Nara
    7-Dec Kyoto Himeji
    8-Dec Tokyo Train to Tokyo
    9-Dec Tokyo
    10-Dec Tokyo
    11-Dec Brisbane

Can anyone reccomend the best place to buy JR pass from, and the Suica pass? Also what apps are good for andriod and finding the right stations/lines when we are there?

I have been to Hokkaido twice now but never in Autumn. Length of stay is such a subjective value but I could easily have spent a month there.

    Some Autumn reports:
    Autumn Color Report 2015

    2015/09/17 - Daisetsuzan Report

    2015/09/16 - Daisetsuzan Report

Other places in Hokkaido I would consider for Autumn colours include:
    - Biei,
    - Utoro,
    - Lake Akan,

Is anyone interested in Horse Racing? I'm looking at going to the Tenno Sho event, which is the first of Japan's version of the triple crown.
Has anyone been before and can give any tips/advice?
