Has anyone travelled with small kids? I'm going in March/April and taking a 2.5 and 4.5 year old with us.

We are finding most accom for 2 adults, and 2 kids <6 suggest twin rooms. but they say the beds are single? is this correct? be a bit tight fitting 4 in 2 beds.

We are looking at doing Tokyo, Osaka, Nara, and more tokyo.

Getting JR passes, doing Universal studios, and disney land too.

Such good information! Im assuming you can buy subway passes when you are there?

Did you use a pocket wifi? Currently looking into them:thumbup:

    Hey guys..

looking for some input to see if the itinerary is doable, and also if there is anything outside of accommodation and the JR pass that i need to book before i get there...

most concerns are around the skiing and the bus trip from Tokyo to Fuji Q

Anyone know how busy the new shinkansen service from Tokyo to Kanazawa is.

Will be in hoping to go their in first week in Feb 2016 with my JRpass:)

I am aware that it is a popular destination & the Shinkansen service is still fairly new there.

Hoping someone can confirm the likely hood of getting seat reservations.

Ps will be JR green pass if that helps in the availability stakes.

We got the 3 day tokyo subway passes when we arrived at the airport. It depends on which type of pass you want, just check the notes on that website linked

And previous trips we've used b-mobile prepaid sim with a pocket wifi that i already had, once with airport pickup and once with delivery to a hotel.

Will be arriving in Japan tomorrow and will be trying a 'yokoso' branded prepaid sim that i got from ebay for $38 ($47 less 20% during an ebay promo) for 2GB/30 days and will be using my phone as a wifi hotspot

Well......that went quick! We leave next Wednesday.

Just for the sake of any last minute tips, itinerary is something like this:

28/10 [OOL to NRT] - Fly to Narita, get JR passes and get to the hotel (staying in Shinjuku)
29/10 [TOKYO] - Odaiba shopping, then Tokyo Motor show
30/10 [TOKYO] - Asakusa District & Ueno Park
31/10 [TOKYO] - Poke around Shinjuku
1/11 [TOKYO] - Check out Harajuku
    2/11 [TOKYO] - Rest/poke around Shinjuku
3/11 [OSAKA] - Train Tokyo to Osaka, see Osaka castle
    4/11 [OSAKA] - Universal Studios
5/11 [HIROSHIMA] - Train Osaka to Hiroshima, see Peace Centre
6/11 [HIROSHIMA] - Miyajima day trip
7/11 [KYOTO] - Train Hiroshima to Kyoto
    8/11 [KYOTO] - Temples & markets
9/11 [KYOTO] - Poke around Kyoto
10/11 [KYOTO] - Nara day trip
    11/11 [KYOTO] - Poke around Kyoto/Gion
12/11 [TOKYO] - Train Kyoto to Tokyo
13/11 [TOKYO, NRT to OOL] - Day in Tokyo, fly home

Have a 14 day JR Green pass. Seeing as the first bit is in Tokyo I think we'll wait a couple of days and activate it on the 31st so it will cover all the longer trips and the NEX back to Narita on our last day. Will either get single tickets or maybe a 2-day subway pass for the first couple.

Organised a pocket wifi dongle. Considering a sim-card as well in case my wife and I are separated.

Missus has sussed out plenty of 7/11 locations for cash withdrawals, we'll probably change over $500AUD to take with us to get started.

1-2 kind of 'free/rest' days in Tokyo, will have to check out now if there're some Samurai districts we can get to.

edit: Picked up a power adapter yesterday....US/Canada with 3 prongs, filed off the earth and she's ready to go.

    Cheers :D.

To be honest the below could all be done in one day:
5/11 [HIROSHIMA] - Train Osaka to Hiroshima, see Peace Centre (about 2.5 hours)
6/11 [HIROSHIMA] - Miyajima day trip
7/11 [KYOTO] - Train Hiroshima to Kyoto

    http://jprail.com/destinations/worl...o-hiroshima-and-miyajima-from-osakakyoto.html

Leave your bags at Hiroshima station so your bag free for the day.

Nice area. So many small, interesting bars. I won't make it there tomorrow. Enjoy!

I guess we'll have a bit of a slower paced trip. Thanks for the suggestions anyway, bit late for me to convince the missus to change any stays.

Last couple of nights out of work, keen to fly on the Dreamliner instead of the Embraer 190 I'm on every week too!

Anyone happen know when the Tsukiji fish market (specifically, the auction viewing) closes in 2016? Or too early to tell? The website only shows the 2015 calendar, nothing for 2016 yet.

I've read reported dates for March and November but hoping to visit before the relocation/shutdown of the old site. My planned dates in Tokyo is 9th-15th March.

Going to Japan for Christmas, any thoughts of a young children friendly area to stay in Tokyo?

Please post feedback on how you go, or PM me please with lessons learned. I'm taking my 2 and 4 year old children over there in March and am looking for hot tips.

The official moving date is November 7, 2016. While I write this I can see the construction site of the new fish market. The buildings are almost completed.
