planning on moving back to Tokyo later this year, possibly early next year. the office is happy with working from home, so I won't need to get a job there again. Kids want to move back too...looking forward to it!

Congrats! May I ask how old your kids are and if they speak Japanese?

14 and 9, 14yo grew up in japan from when she was 6 months old, until 7yo, and the 9yo was born there and spent his first 2 1/2 years there...14yo is fluent, 9yo...not fluent, knows enough to pickup the rest quickly enough.

I would think kids wouldn't really want to leave their friends behind but it's great they're so eager

Yeah, there's some talk going around about subsidising domestic travel (with a predictably tiny budget allocation,) but nothing around international travel.

And I think it is totally unrealistic to assume something like this would ever materialize. The cost would be enourmous, they simple do not have the funds for his, and politically it would be suicide, considering that the majority of tourists to Japan, are Chinese "budget" tourists.

Infections in Japan are increasing again, not much, but it seems there is a trend. In particular worrisome in Tokyo, for 3 days now they reported more than 40 new infections.

AFAIK still closed, even PR's have limited exceptions permitting them to return.

ED- interestingly they use an additive list rather than have denied unless otherwise:

I can't see any obvious holes in it though, looks a lot like everywhere which flights normally come into Japan from is subject to restriction.
