The display in my Hitachi DV-P250 DVD player stopped working the other night, being a fussy bastard I wasn't prepared to have a DVD player in my system that didn't have an operable display so it was off to JB Hi-Fi I went....

For $450.00 I got a Pioneer DV-355 DVD player which is multizone with macrovision disabled, has component video outputs, S-Video outputs, plays any media you can throw at it including MP3's, has fantastic sound and picture quality and hasn't had a single annoying 'problem' with any DVD i've thrown at it so far....

And the unit came with 5 DVD's included in the box and a voucher to purchace 3 more DVD's at 15% off (which I did and is included in the above price)....

    Overall a great buy....

Just in case any of you are in the market for a good DVD player! Definatly reccomended....

i bought a VCR last week and nearly fell over when I saw the price of a mid-range VCR (stereo sound, long play) is higher than many reasonable DVD players... :(

    I found the same thing....

I was gonna get my parents a new VCR for christmas and found the DVD players were far cheaper than the mid range Hi-Fi VCR's....Ended up getting them a DVD player instead!

I managed to get this unit from JB hifi here in Bris for $325, but I noticed that it has gone back up a bit now.. was $369 the last time I saw it.

Very happy with it for the price.

VCR's are prolly still expensive compared to dvd players becos of the components... more mechanical parts i would assume.

Does that pioneer have a 5.1 output for the audio.... ???? I want a new dvd player but my surround audio system has only 5.1 input.

DVD player market is very competitive and also the big manufacturers sell a lot more DVD players these days than VCRs, therefore they order large bulk amounts of them from their factories, which means lower buy prices for them, which in turn is passed onto the consumer.

DV-355 has co-ax and optical digital out and 2 channel analogue out. Still need a decoder/receiver.

I hate threads like this, My first DVD player cost me ~1000, and it dosn't do any of the things these new fang-dangled players do..

Yes TED81.... but I bet your 'old' $1000 DVD player has a far superior build quality as well as using higher quality components than whats on offer these days.
