Guys, I didnt see a thread for this so I thought I would start one (maybe a little early :)).

It looks like things are happening with Kaby Lake, announcement expected at Intel's IDF in mid August (possible launch date).

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/10503/intel-begins-shipment-of-seventh-generation-core-kaby-lake
    http://wccftech.com/intel-kaby-lake-core-i7-7700k-cpu-leaked/

It looks like the mobility cpus have started shipping to OEM's, desktop cpus show a week 50 start date, so maybe 6 months away?

    Open for discussion.

Given the Skylake hype thrown up, I think they are really struggling to give real advances lately.

We will see but not particular thinking this will be anything special.

Will this be where I finally retire my 2700k @ 4.8?

    I doubt it...

"The word on the street" seems consistent with a 2016 Q3 release.

Kaby is more of a chipset tweak than anything, slight power opts.

The big benefit is that it will be Mobo & socket-compatible with Skylake, and also hopefully Cannonlake since the Union point chipset was designed for it originally. So grab a new Kaby system with a superceded Skylake CPU, then upgrade the CPU for Cannonlake & get 14nm.

Kaby Lake wont have 8 core mainstream cpus

talk is however they will have 6c/12t i7s and 6c/6t i5s. All rumour of course, but no point having a mainstream platform which has the same cores/threads as the enthusiast platform.

Skylake E will only have 8c+ cpus.

Ohh 200 series boards. Tempted to ditch some Skylake gear and wait to see what lands.....but am worried I would get impatient and grab X99 instead.

Bit early to start selling unless you can wait it out with no gear for a while and be ready to jump when it launches. I was thinking the same thing but its not close enough.....yet

    lol my first thoughts too

My ancient OC'd 2600k has now lived through 2 GPU upgrades, started on gtx 580, then 2xGTX770 a few years ago and now a gtx 1080. Does not appear to be bottlenecking, getting great performance. Still awaiting the processor breakthrough to warrant upgrading...

    very valid indeed.

i upgrade because i like to play around with computers, but in terms of upgrading for peformance, my old school i7 930 @ 4.5Ghz would do the same in games as any of my x99 chips.

May not be a complete bottleneck but there are certain games in which your 2600k will perform substantially worse compared to a 6700k. BF4 and Arma3 are two examples of games with massive performance differences between two platforms.

I'm in a similar boat with a 2500k but I'm waiting until the Zen numbers before making the call on whether I ditch it and go new Intel or AMD.
