well, for free BF1942 is doing quite good at the moment.
Sort of jump straight in and play.

A 'easy' and quite fun game to pick up and play is Rune, more a simplified version of Jedi Knight. That'll set you and everyone else back $40.

CS apparently is free, never tried it though, no not much bout it.

Is this a 'im going to a lan' or 'me and my friends are going to have a lan'

If the later go for BF1942 demo, free and lotsa fun.
If you and your mates wanna shell out $10 or $5 depending on the number Rune is alot of fun, just.. um.. install it on 1 PC..

If the first and you wanna know what to expect to play, check out the LAN web site, that'll indicate mainly what everyone else will be playing, LAN's can vary to NWN fanactics to CS fanactics, neither perhaps bothing to set up a server for the other.

[edit] oh, if your young, forget about Rune, sort of has arms.. legs... and lots of blood flying everywhere... very barbaric

It's Battlefield 1942 right now and forever :D

The learning curve tailors to what you want to do (ie: being a grunt player requires less skill than being the Red Baron). And since LANs are all about the social element, the strong team aspect of BF1942 really shines in this regard. The lack of teamkillers is another good point... I urge you to download the demo and start playing it so you're above the "beginner skill level" by the time you play it at a LAN :D

I agree totally, some of these car games are reaaly great at a LAN to break the ice. I love carmageddon 1 from a bit of carnage.

    Go BF1942

Battlefield 1942 - a First Person Shooter (the demo is free to download and excellent to play).

Insane - a car/rally type game with a lot of variations and a lot of freedom. Fantastic for breaking up the seriousness of most FPS games.

CounterStrike - another FPS that has ruled the roost for some time now. Widely played on the net.

Unreal Tournament - another FPS that is a bit less realistic, but very fun.

Delta Force - another FPS with huge outdoor environments.

Ghost Recon - yet another FPS. Very realistic, great squadron play.

Overall I have to rate BF1942 :D as the leader. It's free, it's a great game, you can fly planes, drives car, captain battleships. It's got good graphics and is really easy to learn to play.

I hafta say CS seems to be very popular to this day, I've seen alot of people play UT2003 too. BF1942 is catching up in popularity though. :D

Any of the Carmageddons! Great games, the spills, the laughter, the tears, nothing packs up a room of fully grown men more then by seeing who can take out the most peds while staying ahead of the pack - it's awe inspiring the levels of chicanary these people get up to.

    AvP2, pure unadulterated gaming.

MoH:AA, i love it storm the beaches of Omaha, storm the gates of Stalingrad, pick of the idiots carrying panzerschreks who think that it isn't noticeable watching a man with a 10kg weapon strapped to his back trying to run away from the carnage, watch out for camping snipers then it's into trench fighting with Tommy guns.

Games me and my friends have played that have been some great fun, some are more suited to smaller LANs where you can yell and scream and laugh and what not =)

    Soldat
    Insane
    Worms ( any )
BF1942, more suited for bigger games
    Revolt

There all games you can pick up on the spot and have a goof around.
