Is the C742TU in stock at all those places? I tried to get it here in Melb just yesterday and it seemed that the first shipment had not yet arrived at retail stores - they expected it later this week.

Yeah all those places except for clive peters have them
but the price is higher and you have to talk with them first and if need to price match hehehe
harvey norman offered 886 (they said that it cost price) doubt it
clive peters dont have them but they said to 896 is the best price they can do
retravision is the one with 860 but doesnt have stock in auburn
most places display the price as 949

btw, whats the lightest laptop we can get for sub $1k?

    besides the asus eee

was looking at the dell m1330, but i've decided its a bit overkill, since i only need the laptop to watch dvd/divx and surf the web....something about 700ish should do the job aokay

just looking at the cheap compaqs floating around, are the mouse keys really that soft, or is it only because they have been heavily used? mouse buttons are usally very sturdy and stiff, but these feel soft, same for the hp pavilions

I'd also like to know. What's the best, cheapest ultra portable (or very portable) laptop around? With decent enough build quality so that it's likely not to fall to bits over a couple of years. I'm thinking of buying an old T42 laptop for about 300, wondering if I should just get a new one for twice or three times as much. Need it for making notes for uni, pdf lecture notes, pdf journal articles, general web browsing, SPSS, all manner of office stuff, maybe divx/xvid - ability to play 1080 hd rips (in x264/h264 or the other format) would be nice but not necessary. Widescreen would be nice too (and I think most new laptops would be wide?). Most importantly, I want it to be light and fairly small (14/15 inch screen) and thin.

If not sub 1000, how much would a laptop like this cost? Also wouldn't mind running vista on it at some stage. Would I be better off just buying the 2nd hand T42 for now and getting a new laptop in a year or two?

"light" and inexpensive usually don't go together. A 2nd hand Thinkpad T4x 14-inch might be the best bet under $700, would be pretty light but then it'll be 2nd hand not dual core etc. The new stuff under $1k is not light at all, usually close to 3kg.

    TOSHIBA SATELLITE PRO M200 C2D-T5450 1.6GHz, 1GB, 80GB, 14.1" XGA, VISTA BUSINESS is around 2.4kg. $988 at centrecom

    ew, combo drive. :(

which good guys did you see this at? my local good guys doesnt have any of the aspire 4300 series left (just the fat bulky chunky 5300 series)

for portable under a grand, the ONLY option is the vostro 1200. but for under a grand you get a celeron. for $1250 you get a very nice 12" ultraportable lappy though, with core 2 duo, which is still a good deal.
