Hi guys scored a MBP to learn the confusing thing that is mac OS.. Managed to get boot camp going.

The thing idles at 50-60c and under load is easily up into 80s and 90s quickly. Doesn't take long to hit 100c and starts to throttle down. I noticed fan didn't crank loud until it hit 100c so I used macs fan control for Windows to get it kicking in earlier but heavy enough load has it in mid 90s still.

I took apart and re did thermal paste on cpu and no improvements. Do these just run hot? Don't want to be watching a movie on a plane and the fan hitting 6000rpm and pissing everyone off!

Currently booting into Windows, but I think Mac OS runs cooler. Its running El Capitan. Its a late 2011 13" MBP with i5 2.4ghz (seen it go to 2.7ghz boost) & 4gb & HD3000.

Maybe I used too much paste? or maybe they just like to run hot!

Blow it away and put the earliest version of OSX you can or ubuntu, see if that makes a difference to CPU useage

But wouldn't booting it into windows via bootcamp be just windows? or is there mac stuff going on in background?

sure you don't just have to update, i used to find with bootcamp that until updated a lot of the windows drivers and settings wouldn't be optimal.

They just run hot. My work 2015 MBP 15in idles at 60c, but fans are inaudible at that temp. Streaming video doesn't usually impact temps or fans much, but any real CPU work will quickly ramp up the temp and fans.

Mine (Ivy Bridge, not Sandy Bridge) seems to idle at 60, then ramp up to 100C pretty quick. I daresay say it's normal for the machine.

Dunno why you'd run Windows on it though, the only good thing about Apple computers is the OS. You'll still get $300 or $400 for that machine as is, money you can use towards a much better specced Windows laptop if you have to run Windows.

Download the Mac version of Starcraft II and your Windows serial should work fine with it.

Yeah I have SC:R, pretty sure it's tied to the battle-net account/launcher. If anyone wants a game I'm down.

I find it funny you wanted to learn mac but installed windows right away haha.

Stick to OSX for a while, I did the same for my role around 2 years ago, was fun to learn something new.

    MacOS is a godsend.

It's just such a pity it's tied to overpriced underspecced hardware :(

Running hot is my only gripe on a really good product. Every model i have had (laptop) that f'n fan is always on. Its got me so attuned i think im hearing things on my 12" macbook i dont think the little thing even has a fan!!! Sometimes i think my pro is going to take off and head back to the motherland
