Situation is; my girlfriend and I always goto Pancakes On The Rocks every Saturday night. And by 'every' I mean every. Every Saturday it's Chicken Caesar Salad + Pancake dish.

So we're getting bored of the place but where else is there to sit down and eat at 12-1am in the Sydney CBD/North Shore area? I don't want it to be too expensive (the average dish should be around $10-$15) and it has to have somewhere I can park.

There is a Cantonese place in Chinatown you could try - Superbowl, open till 1am at least every night I think. There are a few branches, I know the Goulburn St one is open then for sure. Food is decently priced, dishes def in your range - also some cheaper ones. I recommend the congee, there's a sizeable bowl and goes down well late at night!

BTW I hate Pancakes at the Rocks' savouries. Their desserts are fantastic, but everything else seems very average to me, especially for the price.

EDIT: sorry, forgot the parking thing. I don't think it has any attached parking, but there should be street space around esp on Sussex St at that time I think. I dunno exact number on Goulburn, but it's between the intersections with Sussex and George (opp side from Morning Glory, Easy Way, delifrance)

There are kebab shops scattered every 100 metres along the popular pub runs, can't miss them

If you end up over near Star City they have a number of late night eateries open iirc.

East Ocean restaurant (entrances on both sussex and dixon streets) does a late night yum cha, but I'm not sure which days and exactly what time they close. There's also City Extra, but that's probably a downgrade from Pancakes.

Superbowl++ in my books. Try the Fukien (fujian?) fried rice. Beeeewdiful.

By kebab do you mean Yiros?

In SA kebab means chicken / beef on a stick. My house mate and I saw an add the other day where they called a yiros a kebab

Lol yes, i was actually having this discussion with a couple of Drunken South Aussies last week at a pub (just down the road from an afformentioned Kebab shop..)

I always wondered why we had the one name for two different types of food... But yes, we call them kebab's. What about the other states? Anyone care to comment? Is SA the odd one out or is NSW?

I asked about this at a Kebab shop in Sydney, and I got the 2-DVD Extended Cut about how Kebabs are actually a Turkish/Lebanese cuisine and how the Greeks took it, added garlic or something and bastardized it, damn the Greeks, if I ever ask for a Yiros ever again I will be banned from the store, blah blah blah.

Another one I noticed was Fritz/Devon.

On topic: there's also Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Wooloomooloo open 24/7 iirc... pies and hotdogs. Also very nice.

actually... I remember when about 10yrs ago or so all the kebab stores I went to were called yeeros. I was like... thats a funny word, and had no idea what it was. But they're all called kebab stores now

Though... chicken/ beef on a stick are still called kebabs here. I wonder what would happen if they served both the kebabs in rolls and kebabs on a stick

Roll of meat cooked whilst rotating = doner kebab
meat on a stick = shish kebab

    Not quite... -> http://www.btinternet.com/~doner.ride/battle.htm

The 'doner' kebab refers to the type of meet in the kebab, the 'doner' meet is a psuedo-minced lamb thing which is reconstituted on the spit. Chicken Shawarma spit's are what the chicken will be on..

But yeah, basically we consider the 'shish-kebab' to be your roast while on the eating stick varient of the kebab.

Err I eat it at Pancakes on the Rocks:

My favourite pancake is probably a tie between Devil's Delight and The Ultimate. The small Devonshire Pancakes are also good.

Hahahahah well it does have a very literal name. There's a (pretty decent) Thai place called The Thai Place opp Epping station as well...I'm sure it's a widespread joke :D

Hey wink can you finish a whole serving of devil's delight by yourself? I tried once and gave up, total sugar overload for me...I reckon it's definitely a place for sharing :p

I usually share with my girlfriend (to keep costs down more than anything) but yes if I am hungry I can down a whole pancake dish no problems - I can handle the excess sweetness :weirdo:

Heres my explaination of the different kebabs

Yeeros, Yiros or Gyros (How it is spelt in greece) is Greek kebab which is the meat in a roll with the salad

Doner kebab (or Kebap) is Turkish version of the yeeros kebab. The main difference is that Yeeros meat tend to have a bit more herbs than doner kebab meat.

Shish kebab is the meat on a skewer.

Thats probably the only thing I learnt in Turkey and Greece since they made up a large portion of my diet....kinda sucks when you don't know the language. hehe
