I found il2 sturmovik and LOMAC to be a bit too complicated. I remember back in the day games like f-22 raptor and force commander were a bit more dumbed down. Basically I'm after real flight physics, just easier targetting systems :p Anyone know of any?

It was never particularly realistic, but it was simple and good fun - try Crimson Skys

I never found il-2 to be *that* complicated. It's kinda becasue the planes of the day were fairly simple. As for lomac, I'll get back to you when I've figured out how to actually do more than just fly around, I don't know how to target or fire anthing other than the cannon yet lol.

I'm a bit surprise that you find LOMAC difficult.

Formski's easy steps to LOMAC killing...

    1. Select the F15 as your A/C.
    2. Press '2' to switch to the Long Range Air-to-Air Mode.
    3. Press 'd' until you have selected your AIM120 missiles.
    4. Press 'i' to switch on your radar.
    5. Use ',', '/','.' and ';' to scroll the two vertical Acquisiton bars over the squares on the radar, then press TAB to lock them up.
    6. When in range shoot.

Or the even easier version when you're too close.

    1. Press '3', '4', '5' or '6' to select the different short-range modes.
    2. If not on press 'i' to switch the radar on.
    3. Press 'd' to select the missile you want, or 'c' for cannon.
    4. Point the aeroplane at the target until the radar locks on.
    5. When in range shoot.

Similar steps for the Russian fighters. Unfortunately I suspect the coders (being Russian) selected keys that are intuitive in Russia for the radar, but not to those of us using english.

    Doesn't seem that difficult however.

Remind me to print out those instructions and tape them on the inside of my cockpit.

There's a gaming coming out called HAWX which is arcade-like gameplay with the option of a slightly more realistic flight model if you choose to have it:

Graphics are awesome from the screenies

Clearly, you've never played LOMAC multiplayer.

You realise that method of BVR engagement will just lead to you depleting your supply of missiles and making yourself very vulnerable, right?

Lock on is a lot more complex than your post gives it credit for I must say

edit: I shouldnt make that assumption, I'm sorry - but the above tactics might work against easy opponents in single player but in multiplayer against actual humans its a whole different kettle of fish and a whole lot more fun too :)

IL2 multiplayer is just absolutely WICKED though I love it

Graphics always look awesome on trailers, I hope the actual game looks as good as I might even try this one myself :)

cheers formski and others for the tips. i might just reinstall lomac again. i played the game so much i can land and take off easily; except, in the su-33 how do you land on aircraft carriers?

Actually I've got some time in LOMAC Multiplayer, the above post was just to help him get going as it's not spectacularly difficult. Admittedly the SU25 and SU25T are somewhat more complex, but not majorly so - the targetting system on the 25T is cool

As it is LOMAC doesn't allow you to run proper BVR manoeuvers anyway - the missile flight models are absolutely screwed on the US side (AIM120s bleed airspeed way too much)

I've spent more in Falcon 4 both LAN and internet and find that what I've read real world wise works much better there (max own A-Pole, minimize opponent's A-Pole, then crank left or right until AIM120 Active before turning back in to follow up)

Also AA12s in Falcon 4 are absolutely scary to defend against.

As for IL2 I haven't spent a huge amount of time and my gunnery accuracy is s###house. Need practice I guess :D

Well if you liked Crimson Skies there's always Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge (2003?) on Xbox. Smith & Tinker picked up the Crimson Skies and Mechwarrior licenses sometime last year, hopefully they intend to do something with them. :)

Starlancer is still my favourite space combat sim. Of course, it's not like it's had any competition in the last five years.

I've also played Independence War 2. That was the next big step up from x-wing alliance. Has to be one of the greatest space sims I've ever played; in terms of gameplay shits all over X3: Reunion which I've played a fair bit of as well.

In I-war 2 you're stuck in some bulky hauler for most of the game being a pirate ripping apart convoys and stealing their loot. Looked fantastic for its time as well.

Crimson Skies was awesome, I love the world it was set in. Doing the aerobatics through the hollywood O and flying through buildings was tricky but immense fun!

I've given LOMAC another try, in difficulty you can set the game to 'easy radar'. How does easy radar work in comparison to the advanced one? I'm basically want to be able to cycle between ground and air targets with two buttons and have one button to cycle weapons, without having to adjust bomb deployment spacing or whatever, the a-10 was way too complicated.

I always enjoyed F-18 Korea, but it was a bit dry. The Commanche series isn't bad.

I'm looking forward to HAWX, it sounds similar to Strike Commander in a lot of ways.

LOMAC is fun, I love the Su-27.
After every mission if I have enough fuel, I have to pull of a cobra :p
