Haha  I was seeing who would take the bait. Post edited.

Seriously, I meant what I said. I am interested to see what new interesting desktops you Ubuntu upgraders can come up with.

I find it interesting how many people are trying to emulate OS X.

I prefer using a dock style menu as opposed to the gnome-panel window list. Likewise I think all of the icons in Ubuntu look like crap.

The best looking icon set I found on gnome-look just happened to be an OSX ripoff (MacUltimate Leopard).

It's not trying to "emulate" OSX - moreso thinking OSX icons look sexy and acknowledging that a dock is a useful thing.

Nice idea - never thought about dedicating a panel to something like the LM Sensors. I like.

With respect to the animated dock, yeah perhaps, but the dock itself is not unique to Apple. I had a dock on my Amiga 4000 way back in 1994 (screenie below is from 1997).

As above, we're not against anything OS X but rather think that it has a cool and useful look.

Here is my new polish Karmic setup. A few tweaks since my last screenshot. Changed from Yakuake to Tilda which is awesome. and a few gnome pannel changes with the Overglossed theme, Smoked Glass window border and Nostromo-Ubuntu icon set.

I say every time there is a new release my laptop runs even smoother and better. Not bad for a IBM Thinkpad T43p 1.6ghz Pentium M, 1GB RAM system, but i'm in need of a new keyboard and battery. :) Touch wood but I think the kernel panics when there was a bunch of groovy OpenGL eyecandy has fogged off too.

I've switched over to the Dock methodology too. It means I can effectively ignore the Applications menu and just get direct access to my programs. I found I've also ditched having more than one desktop. It seems what I needed wasn't more than one desktop, it was more than one task bar. The dock methodology circumvents this completely.

I use Gnome-Do because I love the icon zoom style. I find it provides more visual feedback making it much more intuitive. I am looking for a better alternative though. Gnome-Do is a little buggy, wont stay on top of the desktop 'stack' (panel's will overlay it when they get focus) and doesn't have enough configuration options (why can't I get a totally transparent background?).

Interesting... thanks for the comments, I believe the Steve Jobs inspiration for the dock was his previous OS next step, which is available as a clone through WM's such as Open Step/After Step/Enlightenment, etc where next got that idea from? It may have been amiga... I don't know.

I haven't played with GNOME for a while but with the OS X you can both. I have my Quick access apps on my dock and then a stack with the rest of my apps.

Current desktop, more of the same.

Found a workaround for the 'panels overlaying gnome-do bug' involving using ccsm to force the panel to the back. Works well in most cases, but the date/time expanding menu won't go above any open applications.

This setup gives me maximum screen realestate for maximized applications and quick navigation between open applications thanks to the dock. I find I don't need multiple workspaces when all my applications are simply and easily organised on the dock.

Note I don't have the main window minimized. I never do. The desktop is a mystery to me :D

Seeing as you have eliminated one of your panels, why not move Gnome-Do to the top of your screen and set it to "Intelligent Hiding"?

In my case I use two monitors and have Gnome-Do on the second display, but when apps on that monitor go full-screen, Gnome-Do will hide itself, showing only if I move the mouse to the bottom of the screen. When I click on another app, Gnome-Do will appear on top of that app.

I don't like intelligent hiding. I like to be able to tell at a glance what applications I have running and having the dock permanently visible is my personal preference.

Unfortunately the developers of Gnome-Do have a 'minimalisation obsession' and have consciously and vehemently chosen to remove options for modestly popular features. Settings such as transparency and 'always on top' settings are spurned by the developers despite being frequently discussed on the launchpad site.

I understand their motives for doing so, the ccsm package (for example) is a prime example of information overload. I can't help but think that this minimalisation obsession may do more harm than good, however.

I feel guilty for dragging the Gnome-Do team over the coals for this issue though. After all, Docky is little more than a 'plugin' for an application that does much, much more. Still, it would be nice if the more frequently discussed wishlist items were taken seriously rather than merely dismissed without any real consideration.

I'd wondered what Gnome-do was as i have heard it mentioned a number of places so i thought i would check it out. Having done that i am going to install it as well as docky and have a play as it looks pretty damn good to me tbh.

It's awesome. To be able at anytime to go:

    1. Super + Space
    2. Type "10usd in aud" and hit Enter
    3. Get currency conversion as result (without opening your web browser).
...is simply fantastic (and only one of a multitude of uses for it).

For others not familiar with Gnome-Do, there are loads of example videos on YouTube demonstrating the power of it. Check them out.

Sweeet, I use Launchy for Windows which does exactly the same thing (alt-space to load, tab to calculate)

Might have to check this out!

What are all those 'desktop enhancement' features?

Feeling the urge to sproose up my desktop from the default XFCE theme (but using the non-default window manager but still stock .. heheh).
