Loss of a good friend

My good friend - my Tamron 28-75 - passed away recently, unfortunately prior to me getting a FF body. I'd like ideas on what to do (i.e. just get another 28-75, or something else).

I have a 7D + now a 5D. I have a Sigma 30 which I'm in two minds what to do about. I have a Canon 85 F/1.8 which isn't going anywhere. And I have a Tamron 11-18 (works OK from ~14mm on the 5D). Longer glass too but that's not particularly relevant.

The 28-75 was one of my favourite lenses on the 7D for portraits (mainly for my kids as they wont sit still so I liked the zoom) and would've been a nice zoom on the 5D too. But given I'm considering spending ~$400 I think I should consider my options.

- Get another 28-75
- Canon 28-135 (want something faster than that though)
- any other options?

Other ideas floating around my head that don't exactly solve the problem
- Canon 40mm F/2.8
- Sell Sigma 30 and get Canon 28mm F/1.8
- Sell Sigma 30 and get Sigma 50 (a little concerned about AF)
- Upgrade from Canon 85 to Sigma 85
- Upgrade Tamron 11-18 to Sigma 12-24
- ??

 

I'm not sure why/whether you're holding on to the 7D, but you could sell the 7D and buy a Canon 24-70 2.8L Mk1, it's a really nice lens and would go well with the 5D.

Doesn't solve your problem though. Maybe a 24-105 4.0L would suit, if you could stretch your budget. It'd give you a bit more reach, which would be great for the kids and it'll be a bit wider at the 24mm end which will make it great on the full frame body compared to the old 28-75. You might make it there with sale of the Sigma 30? Not sure what they're worth, I don't buy Sigma gear.

 

Ditch the 7D, get a 24-105, it is infinitely better than the 28-135.

 

i'm with you.. i just lost my 50mm 1.8 lens today (AF drive has gone all crunchy and locks up). now my dilemma is to either upgrade to a sigma 50mm... or screw it all and just get an RZ67 with a couple of backs and the 110mm 2.8 lens for the same price

The 7D is primarily for use with the longer glass. It isn't going anywhere.

Firstly it means the 24-205 is outside the budget. Secondly the 24-105 just doesn't appeal to me at all. I suppose the 28-135 doesn't either, I mostly bought the FF for the joy of an F/2.8 zoom as well as shallower DoF with primes as I'm otherwise satisfied with the 7D.

 

You could have an F/2.8 zoom on the 7D. I have one on my 60D without any problems.

Seems like you could be better served selling the 5D and getting a better set of lenses that compliment the 7D and do what you want. Maybe a shorter, faster prime lens to get the subject isolation you're after.

Just how shallow do you want the DOF? I get shallow enough shots at 70mm on my 24-70 2.8L Mk I on a 60D. The 7D is the same crop I believe. Is it a 5Dc or a 5DII/III? If it's the latter, you could easily sell that and pick up a nice 2.8 zoom for the 7D.

 

F/2.8 on FF is approx = F/1.8 on APS-C. Last I checked you cannot get an F/1.8 zoom for Canon. Primes are similar, F/1.4 approx = F/0.9 on APS-C.

The 5D is a classic. It's worth it alone for the 85mm, to get a similar look on the 7D I'd need a 50mm F/1.2, costing more than the 5Dc+85 F/1.8 as it is.

I'm thinking I'll just grab another 28-75 first and look into 30 F/1.4 and ultra-wide down the track. I suppose I was hoping for an idea or something I hadn't thought of yet.

 

The Sigma 30 won't fit on the 5D. Sell Sigma 30, but new Sigma 35 (will work on FF & crop). Buy another Tamron 28-75, great bang for buck lens.

 

WTF?

 

A Tamron 28-75 F/2.8 on a 5D will give the field of view and depth of field of a 17-47 F/1.8 on a 7D. As you're possibly aware, such an F/1.8 zoom does not exist for Canon SLRs.

Some other manufacturers, such as Olympus, have tried to combat this on their smaller sensor systems with F/2 zooms for example.
