I'm looking for advice / recommendations for a good microSD card reader.

Currently I have an el cheapo USB plug in SD card reader with an SD-microSD adapter thing.

It's failing I think with the device often not even being recognised.

I' prefer one which directly reads microSD without the need for some cheap-arse adapter thing.

Good quality / making use of USB3 speeds ideally.

As a tangential question - I have a couple of cards which are of a quality for use in cameras etc. They aren't cheap. What I would like is a card for use with Raspberry Pi for retro gaming etc - so likely wouldn't need to be anywhere near as fast/expensive as a camera one. Also as I will have the games on an SSD it doesn't need to be high capacity. Any suggestions for specs/size?

    Ta.

Any random sd from officeworks will be fine in a pi. They're all fairly fast now. I don't think you can get less than 16gb anymore.
I prefer SanDisk because they literally invented the standard.
Given its for retro gaming, which implies very small total file sizes you'll probably be fine running it all off the sd.
In which case, just get a 32 for like 25$

As for a card reader I don't really know what to look for - or rather more specifically - what to avoid. I feel ebay can be a bit hit and miss.
One that reads both SD and microSD would be handy I guess.

Wondering if any of these could be OK or should be avoided?

I have a bunch of SanDisk and Samsung Micro SD cards depending on what was on special. Even the Pi's are starting to get 64GB given the price differential... in theory wear levelling means the larger size will last longer for a given application... in theory :p

I realised that I was outgrowing the 256GB MicroSD on the Switch so had to go to a 512GB one, although at about 50% capacity it should last a while.

The real shame is that those 50mm NVME drives haven't become more of a thing in some devices... although I supposed MicroSD is harder for the JoeSixPack to screw up.

As for reader, I've got a ugreen job, similar to this which has been working fine for ages. Had a dedicated micro SD slot so no adaptor needed. Works fine for my needs and the speeds of the cards I have.

get this one if you like the comsol design.

if transfer speed is your priority, go for the lexar ipv6ready suggested. i believe lexar professional products are designed for photographers, where speed is important.

Hmm ordered from digidirect 3 July, an allegedly 'in stock' item.
It was posted 19 July (suspiciously only after I sent a complaint/enquiry)
    Arrived 22 July.

I had paid $15 for postage which was 'express' (1-3 days).
While Australia Post did a good job in getting it to me quickly from the time it was posted, I assumed from the website that the 'express post' arrival would be up to 3 days from the date of ORDER. (email did state it was an in stock item)

I'm not being unreasonable in that expectation am I?
I think I should be entitled to a refund (or at least a partial refund) on postage cost at a minimum.
    Thoughts?
