That's just what we need - a monopoly! They always work out so well too!
You know what I mean, let the also rans compete for the leftovers.
Sega and Nintendo are small fish and their day in the console world is ever shrinking. MS and Sony will be the only two playing going forward it seams.
Lets see what valve have to offer?.
I think they will offer a console that allows upgrading as well as giving gamers access to mods.
I have exceptionally little faith in a valve "console" TBH.
With consoles each one has a spec that doesnt change for years.
An upgradable steam box will be like current android phones. Too many specs so not everything works on all devices.
In the end, a steam box will end up being more expensive than an equivalent desktop (or mini itx) system that is supposedly replaces and wont play as many games natively.
Bingo.. also factory in the Linux OS no thank you.
Why would the os matter? Its a console. ..
The Steambox isnt, apparently.
Its a mini PC running Linux.
All rumour, obviously, but its a pretty consistent rumour
I said why does it matter what the os of a console is
For the PS4 and Xbox it doesnt.
The Steambox is running linux, right now very few games are ported to linux.
Thus if a Steambox does arise, then there will be very very few games for it.
That's what i was going to say ^_^.. the steambox would need windows otherwise the Game library would be cut back considerably. And thats the number 1 thing going for steam.. the massive amount of content..
Steam should really sign a deal with DELL, Lenovo and any other PC OEM to have steam pre installed and advertised along with the PC's.. could also do a deal with companies like Gigabyte, ASUS to give a few free steam games with products.
Going to dedicated pc is bad because of how quickly it will become outdated and not good enough. Were's the PS4 and Xbox Infinity will be still running games silky smooth 5 years from now.
On 5 year old tech, and 5 year old graphics etc etc.
A lot more games are currently available for Linux than they are for PS4/Xbox 720.
My vision for the steam box is,
A console like the original xbox, Quad CPU 8gb ram and the ability to swap the video card out like a cartridge.
HDD removable like the ps3 so you have the option of SSD.
Keyboard and mouse support like the pc as well as a 360 pc controller?.
I really think there is a market for a console like pc.
The biggest sticking point will be the OS that it runs on.
If its not Windows then its going to take a significant amount of effort for Devs to develop for it.
And the market for a Steambox will be diluted by normal desktop and laptop PC's.
If it runs Windows i dont see an issue, but the user experience could get really shit very quickly.
Or they could use Windows 8, and it will be shit straight away
But in all seriousness, i really dont see how Valve could make a Steambox that will work unless they make their own OS and have a hardware spec.
I thought the ps3 ran some sort of linux for the main OS,
Dont think so, you could run linux on a PS3 way back when, but i thought it was just some proprietary OS
PS and Xbox have development kits for game developers.
Steambox will have next to zero support as each Steambox is not the SAME!
From looking online most use linux and Hd7770 Graphics... "slower then PS4"
Steambox is just Linux gaming PC.. its pointless
And windows 8 is a great OS once you install classicshell (FREE) its just windows 7.5
All the pluses of 8 with zero of the negatives.
