Well ive got a mini pc here with a 9400t. It has 8gb 3200mhz of ram how ever my old work lappy has 16gb of 2400mhz ram.

IF im going to run a linux os (true nas) what would be the best set up, the work PC is dead (broken screen) and yes absolutely i should just buy some new faster ram but you know reuse and recycle

Depends on what you use case is.

    Generic use cases:
    Gaming? 3D rendering? Less (faster).
    Spreadsheets, VMs? More (slower).

Wouldn't be the first post I've not read completely/ accurately.

Then for OP - go with more RAM.

100% - storage servers will use all the RAM you can give 'em for caching - speeding up reads and writes.

This is extra important for truenas as it uses ZFS as the storage file system, ZFS loves cache.

I don't use truenas myself but do use ZFS, and on my combined storage/docker server, has ZFS limited to 128GB (of 256GB), and it uses all of it, all the time. advanced features like Deduplication (wouldn't recommend that unless you have a use case suitable for dedupe - just use compression instead) needs even more RAM or performance tanks.

Yep should say it's 8 GB or 16gb

Freenass, Plex, sabnzbd is about the limit of it

Those mini-PC's generally all benefit from more RAM, often they're single stick so just going dual channel increases performance. The only time more Mhz is desirable (assuming cpu/mobo can handle it) is when using the iGPU for games, but again more RAM is also good there too so you can allocate more to be dedicated for gaming :)

I have a rtx based laptop for that. It's a 3060 now it's permently under my desk on a cheap hub, cant remember the last time it was turned on infact I took the 32" monitor to shed so I could use it with chrome cast Infront of rower (again rarely used) I don't think that PC was ever gamed with I simply got it for the CPU power for autocad.

Then there is my old gaming rig sitting under the stairs with a 1080 in it plus 3 X 1tb 2.5" SSD drives that were crazy expensive.

Plus an amd A10 htpc system that's been half gutted.

I really need to do a cull get rid of crap, keep what's usefully.
