My kids each have iPads. We do allot of travel in the car. I've just thrown out a car-dvd player (anyone remember those?!).

Problem: how do i get avi/mp4/mkv file type movies to play on iPads?

Can i put them on a micro SD card reader and play them on the iPad somehow?

Yep, i use VLC on my laptop. SO that will download to an iPad, then the iPad will "see" the micro SD card reader like an external HDD and let me play it, yes?

Just to add to bYrds eloquent post, yes VLC is a fantastic app for getting media onto your iPad without having to add the media to your itunes library, and doing a full sync.

Here is a quick run down (taken from online):

    1. Connect the iPad to your computer via its USB cable.

    2. Launch iTunes, then select your iPad under "Devices" on the left side of the window.

    3. Click the "Apps" tab, then navigate to the "File Sharing" section by scrolling to the bottom of the window.

    4. Click "VLC" in the "Apps" section on the left side of the page. The list of current media files for the VLC player automatically appears on the right side of the page under "VLC Documents."

    5. Click the "Add" button at the bottom of the "VLC Documents" box. The "Choose a File" window opens.

    6. Navigate to the video you want to add to VLC, then click the "Choose" button. The video is automatically added to the VLC player on your iPad. Click the "Add" button again to add more videos.

Thanks, will give it a try.

I wanted to avoid the full sync. But wasn't sure if the iPad would pick up the files on the HDD.

WIth Apple and iTunes it's always overcomplicated and annoying.
Android tablets/phones just appear as a windows hdd when connected via USB and you can copy and remove files as required, not to mention sdcard support, etc (they also support direct plug in usb hdds or thumb drives via adaptors these days).

You don't need to do the full sync with VLC... just plug it in and transfer.

Ahhhhh. So i won't need to store movies on a micro SD card and reader.

I'll transfer straight to iPad. I can give that a go now then ...
