Back in December I met a girl who was a good friend of my housemate. She was working in Frankfurt as a kindergarden teacher at an international school but came home to see friends and family. We got along really well, very flirtatious. Sadly we didnt have long together. But we knew there was something there between us.

Fast forward to today and we're still together and she's now teaching at a new school in Panama City. We were planning on me moving to be with her after I graduate from my graphic design course in Feb. But we cant wait any longer and I can finish my course online. So I fly out on the 30th September...

I'm booked to spend a night in LA before flying out the next day on a 6 hour flight to Panama. I've traveled overseas before, but moving is raising some funny questions. The major one I'm a little paranoid about is flying in and out of the US... I'll send some stuff in boxes later, but I'll be taking essential clothes laptop stuff, camera gear. I have maybe 6-7 HDD I'd like to take with me, maybe 10 TB worth. Probably 8 TB of those will be movies and TV shows. Am I being paranoid about these drives being checked? This sounds like a stupid question in my head, but I've heard to many horror stories about US customs. Someone please tell me I'm worrying about nothing and they dont have the authority or even care to look at these drives. Feel free to call me stupid

Err upon the side of caution if not sure.
Is there any reason you're unable to back them up here and then post them to yourself over there ?

carrying 6-7 hard drives would probably not seem suspicious at all to the average rational person

there are no average rational people in US customs

Ask yourself - do you really need all that data? I moved to the UK with my girlfriend about 3 months ago and left behind my 12TB NAS for a single 1TB 2.5" HDD with only my music, a few movies and some TV series that we hadn't finished watching yet. The internet's fast enough (and unlimited for £20 a month) here that the rate we download vastly outweighs the amount we watch, and I replaced the NAS with a Raspberry Pi and a exernal 3TB disk.

I personally couldn't justify sending my hardware across to the other side of the world, probably because we aren't going to live here forever but if you're moving for good, I suppose it makes sense.

Yeah dude, 8TB is a lot of tv shows/movies. How many of those will you watch again? Just redownload them if you want to watch it later?

On the list of things to worry about, taking my NAS would be number #642 on the list.

    Panama. Interesting. :Paranoid:

Just erase 'em. I nuked 12TB of music/TV/Movies about a year ago. Don't miss it at all and I'm better off for it.

Yeah OK fair enough, it is a really stupid thing to worry about. I have two Western Digital drives for backup of all my photography and graphic design stuff so I'll just take those.

Traded it years ago. Had 180,000KM on it and i reckon the gearbox was close to crapping it. Was a very hard driven car ;) I do however have a 2011 Ford Fiesta that will be for sale :)
