As part of the Kongregate Labs contest, I decided to have a go at making my first ever game. The tutorials on the website were easy enough for a newbie like me to follow, and I managed to submit the game just before the entry deadline. I didn't win, but I wasn't expecting to. =0)

It's called Havoc Copter and is a top down shooter. There are a few things I didn't manage to get finished before the deadline, like a pre loader, ground based enemies and decent sound effects, but for my first ever game I think it's ok.

I'm posting this now because I didn't want to post during the competition period in case I was accused of trying to rig the votes. So please, have a play, and let me know what you think! Be as critical as you need to be, I need as much feedback as I can get to improve in the future. =0)

Thanks for the comments guys. I did actually have a fucking awesome track to work as the background music, and i'd timed enemy events and such to work with it, but it blew the filesize WAAAAY out. =0(

Can you host it somewhere else? I spent waaaaaaay to much time at work on kongregate, and they blocked it :(

Do you have a link for the FAQ and tutorial for making?

Looks like it could be a bit of fun over Xmas :)

Not too bad for a firt go.

Took a little time to get into the action though, and the copter never really pulls up as quick as I'd like.

Will do, i'll host a version with the music I wanted as well, so you can get the full effect. =0)

I followed the tutorials at Kongregate, which are located here: http://www.kongregate.com/labs

There is a lot of stuff that I implemented that I learned myself by experimenting, or by googling for examples.

The motion of the helicopter was one of the things I never quite managed to get just right. In the tutorial examples the ship only moves exactly while you're holding the button, and I thought it felt really artificial. I tried to create some kind of momentum system, and the game is the end result.

Yeah, it was literally about 30 work hours to make. I'd never used Illustrator before I started it, so I got much quicker as I got into it, but it still took ages.
