14 Weeks old and she sleeps in my palm. Was going to get a Sun Conure but opted for a parrot that isn't as noisy. In the process of building a bird cage large enough for a Mandarin tree and some grape vines (for the bird to eat the fruit).
Thanks Dave Taught her step up and also to come to me when I tap my finger on the ground. Took quite a few food bribes but I'm happy enough for one day of progress. Has anyone had any experience with the training clickers?
sweet looking bird! Watch it inside your shirt like that though, my bird likes riding around in my shirt, now I have a whole collection of tshirts that are full of holes. Make toilet training the next thing you teach it
I'm a bit divided on toilet training as I've read about some of the medical problems it can create if the bird either holds on or tries to release too much just to get some play time. At current I just wait around or read a book till she goes to the loo and then I know she's good for at least the next 20 minutes. I bought a clicker yesterday so I'll be trying to teach her some new tricks soon.
Gorgeous!!! Lots of info on clicker training if you google, but the basic premise is that you teach the animal to associate click = treat. To condition her just click & treat repeatedly as many times as you can throughout the day. You'll expect at least a few hundred reps before she's getting it. Once youve done about that many, click and wait to see what she does. If she looks to you expectantly, she's getting it. If not, more repetitions. OncE she's conditioned you can begin using it to 'mark' behaviors you want to reward. Read up about successive approximation she teaching tricks and complex behaviour. Baby steps!
Yeah I'll be getting my hands on as much training material as possible. I won't go insane over it but I'll be happy if she can play dead, step up and hop at my clicking will!
mm, can't say I've heard that, but I haven't really researched the subject either. I don't know if it's likely to be an issue though - my bird will quite happily crap on me if I don't regularly hold him out on a finger/put him on a perch. If he doesn't need to go he just does a little wiggle and looks at me as if to say 'I tried ok'.
At the moment it's my ninja reflexes that are saving me. I interupt his wiggle/walking backwards and disrupted, he stops. I then place him on the bin and he goes You can see her in my latest aquaponics video
I tried to watch her video, and get "an error occurred please try again later", but I tried last night and today, same message....
