very helpful guys, thanks
I had a QNAP that I had to RMA within 6 months due to backplane issues, kept dropping perfectly good brand new drives as degraded, in different arrays, after reading online it was very common.
Synology replacement hasn't missed a beat in over 18 months (with the same 'degraded' drives )
so there were some eBay sales on
i've ordered a Synology DS218+ ($449 delivered) and 2 x Ironwolf 4TB ($147 each, delivered)
all come with Aussie tax invoices for business purposes
so after claiming GST, the lot will cost around $675
happy with that
i know i could (should?) have gone down the HP40NL path, but this solution is simpler, prettier (WAF), smaller and brand new
couldn't get my 2TB external drive to work nicely with my Billion router's USB port
so will just run periodic backups to that
WAF is, beyond all measure of doubt, the single most important technical thing to consider win all new technology purchases.
the WAF factor is both a blessing and a curse
EDIT - and i hear the Ironwolf drives work well with Synology NAS as they "talk" to each other better???
