    Part of me thinks:

This is it. life, perhaps Complex, unique multi cellular life on mars. Proven, irrefutable, still alive on the surface. Perhaps indicating a very complex form of life under the surface of the planet. Possibly opened a rock and found a fossil of a trilobite type organism or something. Or maybe visual of a subterranean insect type thing wondering around in front of the camera. That would be mind blowing. There would be a massive space race to mars. Everything would change, not only is there life, its

    the other part thinks

They have found an ice crystal or a sedimentary rock that is interesting but not that interesting compared to the first one.

I'm not letting myself get excited about the possibility that it's evidence of life. The let down would be too great.

yeah they should certainly shut the eff up unless it is life.

it was water we'd be like OK. thats really not that unsurprising.

being typical nasa crap, will probably announce they found a new colour rock, thats all most nasa exciting press releases amount to.

As much as I'd love this to be true it's unlikely in this case. The results they are excited about come from Curiositys SAM instrument which basically analyses the chemical composition of a scoop of dirt.

At best I'm thinking it'll be confirmation of organic chemical compounds present in the Martian soil which could indicate the existence (past or present) of life on Mars. Potentially this could lend weight to the idea that life on Earth was kicked off by rocks ejected from Mars.

Past experience has taught me that:

Scientists level of excitement over super nerdy science stuff > The rest of us' level of excitement over super nerdy science stuff.

That's not to say that I'm not rooting for Martians mooning Curiositys cameras though. :Pirate:

Let me fix that for you.....

Scientists level of excitement over super nerdy science stuff = my level of excitement over super nerdy science stuff.

Why do I feel nervous, giddy, worried and tingly all over?!?!

Oh I know..... Scientists are about to tell me about some super nerdy science stuff! Its almost enough for me to go gangnam style.... woot wot wot wot!

My theory is that they've found small amounts of oxygen in the dirt, which leads to the possible existence of 'alien life' (be it single celled orgasm, or ET).

That, or water, or co2, or... who knows what else... perhaps a race of omnipotent space didlos =P

I can't help be reminded of NASA's 'Arsenic DNA' and 'Martian Microbes' debacles.

I doubt the they'd be excited over that..

Wish they wouldn't tease us with 'we have found something, but we can't tell you what it is yet...' I'd rather they just announce it if and when they are sure.
