probably should go in storage subsection, but my problem is not really HDD related.... I think.

put together a freenas box (running latest version):

    Xeon X3450
    Supermicro X8SIF mobo
    4x 4GB ECC+REG
    Intel SSD for OS
    2x 2TB hitachi in mirror

everything was running fine for a few hours, started transferring files over to mirror (don't worry, I have bu), now the stupid thing isn't connected to network supposedly. Can't login, transfer was interrupted. NIC activity lights say it's ok, plugging in a monitor to rig shows no error messages etc.

Is there some kind of dumb power saving feature that has kicked in?

I have no idea where to start :(

ha! in my internet travels I stumbled across a user experiencing similar issues... turns out it is/was a power saving feature that I enabled in BIOS. Changing it back solved everything
