    Yes, shorter.

Some 8x (and 2x,4x for that matter) come with an open ended back, so you can plug larger cards in. Others are not so nice with enclosed slots, hence why you need to modify the card (if you're staying within motherbord warranty).

8x slots normally have plastic at the end preventing insertion on a 16x card.... though there may be some that have an open end

    i wonder how well a gtx 260 performs at 1X or 4X

would it be possible to make a cheap multi gpu folding system using a cheap board with with well laid out pci-e 1X & 4X slots

gtx260 would be bottlenecked at 4x for gaming. however for folding you could probley get by using a 1x slot for them :)

I've heard of this mod before but mostly people tap off the back of their slots, never seen anyone cutting into the cards though.

I might have done it a little neater myself but hey, it's doing exactly what ya want, bloody nice work!

You'd probably run into power limits on the slots. They won't be built for high-end cards. It doesn't matter in servers (because you're only using low-end cards anyway).

IIRC the power are separate from the data lines. The power pins are the 11 pins before the first notch. Not sure on any power specifications for different lengths though. Max power though PCIe slots is 75W though.

Yeah, my boss is a keeper.

The iTunes is for the work provided iPhone, ocau is because it's info rocks and the benchmarks are for stress testing the shaders and gpu on the card. We benchmarked with the pcie 16x to x adapter first to test power limits.

Better to cut the back of the slot.

edit: ah exactly like the toms link above.

Nah man, its better to break the warranty of the cheaper item :p

Server mobo vs cheap videocard, I'd break the video first..

The card is working at 8x, the cameraphone photo is bad but the contacts are all good (plenty of meat on the traces).

Stats: 4 people would have cut the back of the slot.

Wouldnt a server motherboard have onboard video anyways? Pretty cool mod. I had no idea that was possible.

Would say an 8600gt cut down to fit in a 1x slot (if possible) have enough bandwidth to work as a PPU or for FAH?
