Planning a zen 3 build - Currently deciding on ram
I've come up with a few options:

    CPU - Got a 2nd hand 3600
MOBO - bought the Asrock B550M Steel legend
RAM - how to future proof this for zen 3?

Which of these would you guys think has the greatest OC potential?

Edit 25/9/2020: I ended buying the 2x8gb Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 3000CL15 and so far clocked to 4600CL18, can anyone provide advice how to go higher than this?

    Other bits so far:
    GPU - HD5850
    HDD - 1TB A2000 NVME
    PSU - Corsair RM750
    Cooling - Noctua D15

Forget about the B550 board & 2600, I was going to go down that route but no support for Zen+
I'd also be wary of 2nd hand ram, there are some cheap new 16GB kits if you look around, 3200 as well. Try staticICE for searches.
Are you planning on OC ?

Thanks hotrod2go, I did read some people have got Zen+ working but it's not official. I think ill have to steer towards 3300x 3600 to be safe.

Yes I've done some extensive static ice searching and came up with those price ranges. Just need help to decide 32gb 3600 bdie AUD220ish or 16gb 4400 bdie AUD190ish for Zen3. I don't think I can get higher freq 32gb bdie for reasonable price.

    would like to oc

Going with 4 core/8 thread cpu into the future for gaming will be limiting. You'd be better with the 3600.
Kinda depends what games your into with regards to system RAM capacity. Example being RDR2 recommends 12Gb but I've seen MS flight simulator 2020 being 32Gb!
I'd also suggest a better quality PSU to stabilize your OC, if its CPU oc.

Will definitely consider the 3600 but will depend on cost. So you reckon capacity is better than speed?

Well like I said, depends on what your planning to play, check the devs recommendations for system requirements. On Zen+ RAM speed is linked to infinity fabric speed within the CPU, so the higher & stable you can get it, the better performance. But on 3600, I'm not entirely sure.

Get it. More ram speed as long as your satisfied with capacity is always a good thing overall.

I think ok for now. Just sounds like a good deal.

As for infinity fabric, my main goal is to buy ready for zen 3 and we don't know the details of Zen3 and there is plenty of speculation 4000 will be sweet spot for Zen3. Btw I haven't had an amd since amd64

I've done a bit more digging around and found that Micron E do very well at higher frequencies.

I found some Micron E 32gb kits 3000 CL15 for $228inc post. Is this worth the punt?

Turns out including gst its 155 delivered...

Apparently with current Zen 2 chips, the IF clock has been decoupled from DRAM clock. See here for details

I personally wouldn't buy it if thinking of Zen 2 atm or for that matter speculating about Zen 3. However going by what Zen 2 is capable of with peak performance, 3600 or even 3800 kits is what I'd be considering. Bottom line though seems to be the higher RAM bandwidth with good capacity, one should be on a winner.

Zen 3 is imminent, hopefully soon won't have to guess. The aim is to have zen 3 and use it for a good decent number years into the future without needing to change. B550 should at least be good for zen 3 which leaves pretty much only ram. I'm going to try to sell 1080gtx to help fund this.

Fair enough manol. Unforunately my budget is <$180. Would like to have 32gb but don't think they exist.

Hi for zen 2 most chips IF = 1800 mhz ram speed 3600 mhz you can decouple the IF for ram speeds over 3600 /3800 in the bios , but 3600 C14 will be faster generally than 4133 because your IF will be running at about 1100 not 1800 and your latency will be crap, I got lucky and my 3600x can run 1900mhz IF but not all zen 2 chips can run this speed, if you want to get 32 gb the ballistic kit will probably run 3600C16, -p[s some programs/games will run faster with 4133 mhz because all they care about is frequency but not many, that micron E die kit will probably run at 3600C16 check this out

otherwise the Gskill kit 16 Gb 3200c14 OC to 3600 with tight timings your best go for ryzen 3000 series, Zen 3 4000 series is still a mystery
