    Overclockers Australia Bake-Off 2008.

In 2006 we had a bake off (link and link). I think it's time for another. Same rules, same judges.

    What is a bake-off?
A bunch of people, competing with each other to make the best looking baked cake.

    Rules and Conditions?

    1. Cakes must be made by you and only you. No helping from any other person.

    2. Cake must be prepared, cooked and served at the set time provided.

    3. In order to prove that you are cooking the cake, you must take photo's of the cake, ingredients and take photo's of your progress of the cake baking process.

This includes photos of; Ingredients, Mixing bowl, Cake in the oven, cake out of the oven and the final cake.

    4. Cakes Cannot be packet made cakes. The cake must use ingredients used from scratch. (As the saying goes, If you can read, you can cook). So pull out those recipe books and bake up.

    5. Have fun, play nicely.

    Anti-Cheating?
At the start of the bake-off, each participant will be given a number through PM. This is your official OCAU Bake-Off competitor number. You will use this number in all the photos you take of your cake. We suggest you type out your number, and have the number in each of the photo's.

    Judges
    Agg
    PostModern
    Bern

    Criteria of the cake
    The cake will be judged on the appearance. This includes;

Shape; Is it circle, is it a worm? is it rectangle? Not all shapes are plain and boring!
Size; 'It's not the size that matters, it's the way you use it' No true in the OCAU Bake-off. Make you cake BIG AND BOLD! Or you can go with a small cupcake. But remember bigger it is, more you can fit on it.
Colours; It would nice if it wasn't a shade of a colour. Make it crazy! make it a million colours! More colourful, the better score.
Stability; If your cake cannot stand on its own feet, what good is that? Let you cake stand tall and free by itself. Also if the cake is cracked and has fallen apart, you will be marked down.
Creativity; Go crazy, don't be normal... This is OCAU here... There is no normal!

We're not looking for just plain original chocolate cakes, or plain butter cakes. We want some energy in this, some passion and creativity. Be original. Be crazy!

    Prizes
    1st - $20 Gift Certificate
    2nd - 4 stubby holders
    3rd - Misc things

Thanks to Agg for supplying the prizes

    Time, Place?
    Date: 26th July 2008.
    Time: Between 10am - 10pm

Just remember; There are no losers, you still get to eat the cake!

Thanks to Splosh123 for creating the rules in 06, I basically did a copy and paste of the rules from the first bake off.

I think there should also be a photo of somebody eating the cake. I once made a cake that looked great but was inedible :(

Does it have to be a cake, or are any baked goods (pie, biscuits, etc) acceptable?

Would LOVE to enter, but ... never baked a cake in my life!!! I've made chilled cheesecakes and tiramisu's, but baking ... never. I'll get some practice in and let you guys know if i'm good enough to enter officially :) The last cake challenge produced some worthy looking cakes, and I can imagine that the competition has only gotten stiffer since then!

Would love to enter but cruise for charity is on the 26th. Oh well, I'll bake a cake on the 25th and eat it.

Count me in. I learnt how to cook from an old headhunter shaman in Papua New Guinea as a young lad. When I cook, heads roll, and I mean that literally.

Do the cakes actually need to be baked? My best work is done with cheese and icecream cakes...

Some people may not want to take a picture of themselves, but because we can't judge on taste, it will come down to presentation and cooking method.

    Yes you can bake those types of goodies;
Pies - The desert type, not the meaty kind - the base and top of the pie will need to be made from scratch
Tarts - The base will need to be made from scratch, and all fillings in the tart need to be made from scratch as well. Eg. Don't just buy caramel from a can and put it in a tart base and call it your special made caramel tart, you will need to make the caramel yourself.
Muffins & Biscuits are okay as well.

Yes, all entries need to be baked in an oven.

As long as the cheesecake is baked in the oven it will be included, it can't be frozen. I don't think ice cream cakes would be counted as baking, but you could bake a normal vanilla cake and then cover it in ice cream.

As it was a bake off I has to include the other types of cakes, pies, biscuits etc, if it was just going to be cakes, I would have called it a cake off.

I'm also very interested to see what comes out of this competition, as the Geek Food threads has improved in the last two years and the quality of food looks great. I’m going to the Gold Coast soon, so I won’t be able to answer any more questions about the comp, but will do when I get back. ;)

I wonder if I can get a suitably shaped baking tin for my intended creation :)

Oh, 26th of July? Hmm, I may be busy then, so put me down as a maybe.

I was left speechless after I saw the pizza cake. I personally wouldn’t eat it, but wow.

I think we should stick to desserts so that the judging of the bake off is along the same line.

    sorry...its classified...
    Question:

Can those of us who won't have access to an oven on that date do early entries? While I'm on University holidays I'll have access to an Oven, however after the 19th I'm back at my Residential College which means no Oven. :(
