Due to equipment failures, this is now a general VHS thread.

So now it's a VHS thread for all of OCAU, Watched any good tapes lately?

So some of you may be familiar with my tedious retro restorations.
Less of you will be familiar with my tedious slot car restorations.
EVEN FEWER will have seen my tedious actual car restorations!
Basically, EVERYTHING I do is tedious!

my NEWEST tedious task is watching OLD, UNLABELED VHS tapes...

But in the hours and hours and HOURS of SHIT I watched, I found something good:
Xbox launch news report from channel 10:

That's the best thing I found on the first tape!!!

The rest of the tape consisted of:
part of an 8 simple rules episode. Episode 103 "Bridget's First Job"

But in the middle of all the shows which we've all seen and REMEMBER, were the OLD ads, which I found myself paying more attention to than the actual shows for the most part***

    Ad break one:
the premier of according to Jim
    ALL NEW Scrubs
    vodafone
    safeway (and safeway petrol)
    clean and clear
    daihatsu terrios
    forrero rocher
    David Jones
Vicroads Don't use a phone while driving
    Optus

    Ad break two:
    Dog Eat Dog (gameshow)
    NOKIA 7210
coles (on sale December 13th 2002! Middle Bacon was $7.79/KG)
    LG
    UV triplegaurd (sunscreen)
    Mount Franklin
Telstra with a featured NOKIA 8310
    David Jones
    J.A.G RETURNS!

then after this, the tape jumped to an episode of Will and grace and the ads were:

    channel 7 news
    Telstra/foxtel
Safeway (on sale from 9th-15 december 2002 - 10 cans of coke $4.97)
    Oral B 3D Excel
Then an attractive naked woman advertising... something... product wasn't my focus (water or perfume)
    Rexona wipes
Holden end of year rodeo clearance (anyone else remember Holden? They used to make cars!!!)
    Telstra/foxtel AGAIN

GROUND FORCE (like better homes than yours, but not as good)
4 disc special extended Lord of the rings fellowship of the ring DVD box set
maccas muffin.. Things that make you go MMMM!!
    Optus (min cost NOKIA 7210 $1320 over 24 months... 8250 $528 over 24 months)
    Renault
    Kmart
    J.A.G AGAIN!!
From the creator of the Simpsons, Futurama NEXT on 7.

    frangelico?
    Grosse point blank
Futurama is brought to you by Samsung...

*** Futurama came on, and I completely skipped all the ads to watch Futurama.
Sorry fans of old ads, but when Futurama comes on, ALL BETS ARE OFF and I'll simply watch Futurama!

And I had 219 The Cryonic Woman, and 302 Parasites Lost presented to me back to back!
(yes I am more pissed about an episode being skipped on the original airing than ANYONE ELSE.. but I took it since I'd already stayed up so late just to record them)

After I spent the time watching Futurama episodes IN THEIR ENTIRETY despite owning all the episodes since the day they came out on DVD (AND VHS) and having them all ripped to my PC and them probably being on every streaming service in existance by now.

then the tape skips to about 4 5ths of the way through the 5th element on channel 10 and after that is done we get to the RAGE top 50! Fatman scoop and the black eyed peas!

    END OF TAPE 1!
I got serious Member Berries after this... MEMBER WHEN you'd pay $1300 over 2 years and own one of the best phones in the world??
not pay $3,000 up front and still have to pay $70 a month for 2 years?
    I MEMBER!!!

Ads are available on request, BUT my capture card has the annoying thing where when I'm trying to capture shit, if the tape jumps or rolls at all the capture says NO SIGNAL and stops capturing instead of just recording what I fucking told it too!
(if someone can suggest a capture device that doesn't cost half a fucking grand and can still get decent quality of a VHS even when it rolls, I'd like to hear about it, or accept a donation of it for swaps of my Avermedia PCIe card)

I love projects like these. My only request is to throw a couple of videos up on archive.org.

Is it the hardware or the software? Tried using something like OBS to do the capture?

Got any old graphics cards that do VIVO? I know a lot of Radeons had them circa 2002. My dead AIW 9800 SE used to do and I still have is somewhere with the cables. My 9600Pro did it but no idea where that is.

I always find it interesting when you look back at game videos like the XBox launch above and you hear people make comments on how "realistic" the graphics are and how blown away they are. It reminds me of this meme.

Of course one day people will be looking back at the graphics of current AAA titles and thinking the same. :)

The best tapes are the ones I have from the 80's! It's amazing how few commercials there were and how much enjoyment I actually get from watching them :leet:

I've found some treats on the next tape, uploading shortly.

I don't know if it's hardware or software, I'm using the software that came with the capture card..
when I get through some more tapes, if there's an overwhelming amount of things I can't capture I will be looking at better methods.

Have a bunch around, just need to build an older computer again and stuff around with it, but at the moment, all my space has gone to a big desk and TV

I've just found a 60 minutes story of the same era that said in 3-4 years we'd have photo-realism... 17 years later and we STILL don't have it..

Game devs need to GET THE LEAD OUT and stop pissing around!

THATS what I need to capture!

    There will be more!

I have stacks from the 80's and early 90's, but a lot are missing ads, and a lot are from the ABC.
I will be getting to them after I've been through my personal stack from the early-mid 00's

For me half the fun is the unlabeled ones, so that's what I'm doing for now!

One day I might put some up, but basically it's any car I buy. So maybe when/if I get a car again.

So I found an episode of an old show called Control Freaks. It's almost the whole thing and includes:

News about the Sony PSX (Remember that?) Small Xbox rumour, Donkey Kong coming to GBA, Microsoft Music Mixer, Tropico 2 review, The Sims Deluxe, World of outlaws Sprintcars (By Aussie studio Ratbag!), Simcity 4, all star baseball 2004, Kung Fu Chaos, an ad from EA about a bunch of shit they make. and Need for Speed underground, history of TETRIS! Moto GP 2. Complete with period ads!

this is quite a large upload, so I'll edit this post to put them in when they are done!
    {PUT VIDEO HERE!!!!!!!!!!!}

    Also found ads for:
    Turok Evolution
    Super Mario World (Gameboy advance)
    Burnout 2 Point of Impact
Activision (True Crime Streets of LA, Call of Duty, Tony Hawks underground)
and Crash Nitro kart (tape rolled and I lost signal during ad which was annoying. Watching it on the tape was fine)

Don't think this tape has any more treasure, but who knows.

I don't remember this show so I did a little Google search and found there's a Youtube channel where someone has uploaded a couple of episodes from 2003.

    https://www.youtube.com/user/badooleoo/playlists

He's got a heap of other stuff as well including adverts, promos, and some VHS stuff as well. My god what a nostalgia trip I'm having watching this stuff. :)

My parents have 30+ years of vhs tapes at home. I can only imagine what’s on some of them! When I moved out I never brought any with me as the DVD era was well established by then.

I'm holding off on all my VHS resurrection until the Domesday86 project extend from laserdisc to VHS:

    https://www.domesday86.com/?page_id=978

The project bypasses the hardware in laserdisc players to try and better sample the encoded RF data on the discs, allowing them to be interpreted in newer hardware or software.

The project intends to extend this to analogue tape formats over time, which I'm super keen on trying when it eventually happens.

Comparison of indirect RGB capture (left) vs RF sample+decode (right) here:
    https://www.domesday86.com/?page_id=978

    DomDup_comparison.jpg

Demonstration of the current LaserDisc methods and results here:

I remember pissing myself laughing as a kid watching them trying to teach the Dodo to fly.
