New to whisky, long time alcoholic. Recently picked up a bottle of Johnny Walker Double Black. First blend I've enjoyed under $100. Nice smokey flavour.

Any suggestions for something similar worth trying in the 'two kids and a mortgage' price range?

If you want something mild with a bit a smokey flavour, Talisker 10 often pops up on special for around $70. One of my favourites.

Talisker 10 is an excellent choice.
You might also consider Highland Park 12 yr old.

Mate gave me a bottle of Aberlour 12 for doing some work on his home network/computers.

I tried to refuse as I like to tinker with stuff for fun anyway (if only there was a web site/forums for people like me.....) but after a suitably polite amount of time I gave in.

It was easier to accept as he is a bourbon fan and it had been on his shelf for a couple of years anyway :D

Just got email from first choice with 20% off single malts:
    https://www.firstchoiceliquor.com.au/Specials/SelectedSingleMalts
Talisker, Argbeg 10, Laphroaig 10, Jura etc for reasonable prices.

No bonus flybuys points for first choice purchases current though, so will probably wait until DM price matches then use CR + 5% gift cards for further savings...

Ah yes the "prongs" corkscrew rather than the regular one. Also great for snapped corks. Used to be a life saver back in the days when I was a sommelier. :D If you don't have one, another (less successful way) is to sharpen a regular corkscrew point so it really pointy and it goes through all the way easier, and very gently remove the cork. But yeh get one for $10. :D:thumbup:

Can confirm, I noticed it on the shelf at my local Dan's this evening for $129.99.
But I ended up buying another Lagavulin 16 for $114. :D

The South Island is on my list to try at some stage though.

Ah, I thought maybe you bought it cheaper in NZ. We'll be going there so thought it might be worth checking it out.

Juggs, you need to get around duty free exclusives, that is whats good about duty free and whisky :p Occasionally you can find them online, such as the Laphroaig PX Cask from nicks.com.au, but a lot you will not find anywhere but duty free shops.

Anyone else getting on the Starward 10-year Anniversary release?
I saw it was limited, twin bottling (1 to drink, 1 to keep...if you can resist) and only $190 and was sold.
While I don't think their standard and wine cask releases have been anything remarkable, they do present very good value for money, given they are Aussie. So $190 for two limited bottles marking a special anniversary, yeah I'm in.

Just had a look, it's 52% compared to their normal 43/41%. Very tempted but hubby has soooo many.
