If you buy or have some of the JW Red or Black why don't you put a half measure of the Double Black and a half measure of the Red or Black and see if that tones it down enough to make it a more pleasant drink for you?

Not sure that'd work for me. haha. I think it's just something I need to get used to. Because I have quite a few heavily peated whiskeys.

I'm actually finding the JW Double Black hard to drink, even mixed, due to the smokiness

so you say something is hard to drink but then say its better ?

JW black isn’t sub $40? And it’s not a cheap arse drink. Chivas is a poor mans ‘decent’ scotch. It’s the last ditch.

I’d go to chivas before JW red. But not before black. Btw, black doesn’t have a smokiness at all. It’s double black that does.

I was in Japan a few years ago, bought a bottle of the 18 in a 7-11 and basically got smashed off it. Picked up a couple of bottles in duty free and thought I did pretty well, was great value back then. But it was sub-$100 then too...

Currently work is forcing me to do a whole lot of short trips to NZ, so the liquor cabinet is looking good. The Laphroaig PX is a really nice drop, I've eased up on the super peaty stuff lately and this really hits the spot from them, good flavour, not over the top peat.

Where is the best place to buy in New Zealand? Duty Free at the airport or in the Towns?

HaHa! Unfortunately we'll be flying in to Auckland but not out of Auckland. Hubby would have enjoyed that, shame they don't have it in the arrivals.

If you are in Auckland try The Jefferson on Queen Street if you want to sample different flavours. They have a full range and you can just describe what you like to them and they will sample something out of their collection based on that.

Thanks I'll make a note of that.
Can't remember when we last purchased a bottle for less than $80, hubby has expensive tastes.
